The hive no longer sets an agent's CPU or memory cap: caps come from the swarm, else the hive-wide defaults. The container load tab was the only hive UI that set them, and its figures are already exported as OTEL metrics, so with the tab gone nothing wrote meta/resource-limits.json.
Removed: the file's reader and writer, the `hivectl agent set-limits` verb with its host-socket request, the `GET /api/container-resources` and `POST /api/resource-limits/{name}` dashboard endpoints, and the `cpu_quota`/`memory_max` fields of the container view that only the tab read. A leftover resource-limits.json is ignored.
Three follow-ups to argus's review of #5237:
- A down secondary's retry runs `restore` under RESTORE_TIMEOUT (2 min).
Tries run one per tick on one future, so a restore that never resolved
held back every other down account's retries for good; a try that
outlasts the timeout now counts as a failure like any other.
- `client::build_and_restore` warns about a rejected token only for the
primary, which exits right after. For a secondary it logs at debug: the
retry loop already warns once per outage (`DownAccounts::failed` is news
on the first failure and on a changed reason, and an account that came
up starts afresh), so the extra warn repeated on every try.
- `a_secondary_that_comes_up_late_does_not_wipe_the_todos` runs the late
bring-up in a child process of the test binary with HIVE_AGENT_SOCKET
pointed at the test's listener. In-process the variable was unset, so a
wipe placed back in the bring-up path was a no-op and the test passed.
New tests: a_second_rejection_in_a_row_does_not_warn_again (captured logs, alone
in a child process since tracing caches callsite interest process-wide;
a stub whoami answering M_UNKNOWN_TOKEN, the real build_and_restore),
a_failure_after_the_account_came_up_is_news_again, and
an_account_whose_restore_hangs_does_not_hold_back_the_others (paused time).
Audit follow-ups on the secondary-account retry.
The accounts snapshot is written by the heartbeat task and, now, by the
retry loop. Both used one fixed tmp path, so concurrent writers could
clobber it or fail the rename. Each write now names its own tmp file
(pid + counter); a test hammers it from four threads.
A permanently bad secondary logged three warnings per attempt, every 16
minutes, for as long as the daemon ran. DownAccounts::failed now reports
whether a failure is news (first, or a different reason from the last);
only that is a warning, repeats are debug. The two per-attempt warnings
in client.rs and credential.rs are covered by that line, which names the
reason, so the store-token one drops to debug.
The comments in client.rs and a credential.rs test, and persistence.md,
still described the old skip-until-restart behaviour or implied that a
store-listed account without a credential is retried here; that case is
handled by the linked-name set changing, not by this loop.
The daemon's two-minute refresh compared the store's linked account
names with the names it booted with. A secondary that was named but did
not come up - no token at bring-up, a token the homeserver rejected
(M_UNKNOWN_TOKEN), or a homeserver still down after the ~52 s boot
retries - kept its name in the set, so nothing ever noticed it again:
it stayed down until the daemon restarted for some other reason, and
an operator re-linking a rejected account changed no name.
Each such secondary is now tried again on the same two-minute period,
one per tick, after one refresh and then doubling waits capped at
sixteen minutes. One that comes up joins the registry (now behind a
lock) and its sync loop joins the running set; the primary and the
other accounts are not restarted. The store is still only read.
The startup todo wipe moves out of bring_up_account to run once before
any sync loop: run per account, a late secondary would have cleared the
todos the running accounts' sweeps had already deduped.
Part of #5017 (slice M).
An agent's matrix encryption keys lived only in its local crypto store, so
`destroy --purge` or a primary-account token reset lost every encrypted
room's history with no way back (#5022).
swarm-controller now mints a random passphrase (32 bytes from the kernel's
CSPRNG, base64url) for every account listed under each agent's `matrix/`
directory, at `swarm/agents/<agent>/matrix-recovery/<account>`, in a
five-minute pass. The write is a cas=0 create after a read; a path that
holds anything is never replaced, and a create that loses a race counts as
done. The controller's existing `data/swarm/agents/*` grant covers the
write and the agent's own `agents/<agent>/*` read grant covers the read, so
no policy changes.
hive-matrix-daemon reads the passphrase when it brings an account up, after
cross-signing: with no backup on the homeserver it enables recovery with it
(backup + secret storage); with one there it recovers, which imports the
backup key and the self-signing key, and room keys then download through
`BackupDownloadStrategy::OneShot`. No passphrase yet logs at INFO and the
account comes up without backup; any failure logs WARN and never stops the
daemon.
Recovery runs after `ensure_cross_signing`, not before: on a new account
cross-signing must exist locally for `enable` to export it into secret
storage, and on an existing identity `bootstrap_cross_signing_if_needed` is
a no-op, leaving `recover` to import and sign.
Part of #5022 (S1+S2, with the S4 docs).
Scheduled prompts live at swarm level (swarm-controller's
/api/schedules, `swarmctl schedule`, the swarm UI's /schedules page).
The hive dashboard's SCH3DUL3S tab only listed the rows left in
hive-c0re's `scheduled_prompts` table so operators could copy them
over; the operator confirmed everything is migrated.
Removed:
- the SCH3DUL3S tab, its pane, schedules.js, its CSS (including the
`.rqe-source*` rules, whose only emitter was schedules.js) and the
hub tile's "schedules" entry
- hive-c0re's GET /api/schedules and the `scheduled_prompts` store
(with its v1 column migration and test)
- hive-sh4re's `schedule` wire types, which only that route used
- docs describing the tab, the route and the two tables
The rebuild-queue cancel route that shared the module moves to
dashboard/rebuild_queue.rs under an OpenAPI tag of its own.
The two sqlite tables are not dropped: nothing opens them any more,
and persistence.md says they can be dropped by hand.
Closes#4916
Every 30 seconds `workers::swarm_limits` reads the `agent-limits` key of
each agent this hive has and stores the result in
swarm-resource-limits.json, where the drop-in, the heap ceiling and the
dashboard read it. A cap therefore follows its agent to whichever hive
runs it.
Each value goes through the hive's own validate_cpu_quota /
validate_memory_max before it is stored, since hive-priv renders it
verbatim into the container's drop-in, and one bad value refuses the whole
set (argus on #4268, carried over from the wanted-state consumer this
replaces). A failed read, or a bucket that does not answer, leaves the
stored caps as they are; three failures in a row raise a banner.
swarm-nats-auth grants every hive `$JS.API.DIRECT.GET.KV_agent-limits.>`:
read-only, and every agent's key, not just the hive's own. Scoping it to
the hive's agents would need a roster in the auth responder, which
policy.rs argues against. mara chose this on #4268 (c95293); narrowing it
is a possible low-priority follow-up, not planned. A test pins that the
grant reads every key, writes none, and reaches no other bucket.
Contributes to #3865.
The cap file was removed for a cap of `infinity` or a RAM percentage,
so the boot check warned on every start of such an agent, for a
legitimate config. The file is now written on every start:
- a size: its byte count, as before;
- `infinity`: the literal `infinity`. The generators set no JSC heap
ceiling and no subagent MemoryHigh=, and the boot check is quiet;
- a percentage: resolved on the host the way systemd resolves
MemoryMax=N% for the container@ unit. That is permyriad (at most two
decimals, at most 100%) of sysconf(_SC_PHYS_PAGES) *
sysconf(_SC_PAGESIZE), rounded down to a page;
- a value systemd ignores (zero, over 100%, more than two decimals,
unparseable) leaves the unit uncapped, so it is `infinity`.
The file is missing only when hive-c0re can't tell the cap: the
limits file and the kept drop-in are both unreadable, or a percentage
meets an unknown host memory size. The boot check now warns only for
a missing file or a first line that is neither a byte count nor
`infinity`.
Part of #5081 (slice S0-2).
An agent's memory cap was rendered into its flake (`memoryMaxBytes` →
`services.hyperhive.agent.claudeMemoryMaxBytes`), so the closure depended
on it and a changed cap reached the JSC heap ceiling and the subagent
`MemoryHigh=` only after a rebuild.
hive-c0re now writes the effective `MemoryMax=` in bytes to the agent's
runtime dir (`/run/hive/memory-max-bytes` inside) in `write_dropins`,
from the same value the drop-in gets. The file is removed for
`infinity` or a RAM percentage, and left alone when the drop-in is kept.
Inside the container, `nix/agent-modules/memory-cap.nix` reads it at
boot: an environment generator sets `BUN_JSC_forceRAMSize` (75%) for
every unit and `machinectl shell`, `/etc/set-environment` exports it in
login shells, and a unit generator writes `MemoryHigh=` (2/3) as a
drop-in for `hive-subagent-daemon`.
The render drops `memoryMaxBytes`, the agent option is removed (both
spellings fail eval with a removal message), and
`effective_memory_bytes_from` goes with its only caller.
Part of #5081 (slice S0-2).
Agents reach the operator over matrix now (#5115). A `send` to
`operator` is refused, by the broker and by the MCP allow-list check,
with an error that names the matrix MCP tools. The dashboard's Y3R C4LL
tab goes with it: the operator inbox, `GET /api/operator-inbox`,
`Broker::unread_for_recipient`, and the browser notifications that only
ever fired on operator-bound messages.
The harness no longer posts turn failures and plugin-install failures
to the operator inbox. Both are already logged at warn; a new Grafana
rule, `hh-agent-turn-failed`, fires per agent on the harness's
`turn failed` line.
Dashboard-to-agent messaging (op-send, the agent web UI's message box,
mark-all-read for agent inboxes) is unchanged.
Decisions per mara on #5115: q1 a, q2 a plus a grafana alert, q3 keep
dashboard-to-agent messaging and leave swarm-level code alone.
A build_logs row is opened with finished_at NULL and closed only by the
process that runs the build. If hive-c0re stopped in between, the row stayed
open for good: the dashboard listed it with no status, its log stream never
sent `done`, and the retention sweep, which skips open rows, never deleted it.
Coordinator::open now closes every open row as `fail` and appends a line
saying hive-c0re stopped. It runs before this process starts any build, and
only there: BuildLogs::open itself leaves rows alone so a second opener can't
close another process's live rows.
mara on #5034: "effort shares /models fate". The per-agent web UI no
longer sets effort: the `/effort` slash command, the effort picker,
`POST /api/effort`, `Bus::set_effort`, the `hyperhive-effort` writer,
`EFFORT_LEVELS`/`is_valid_effort` and the ACP effort-list payload are
gone, and `lib/modelEffort.ts` with them. The effort chip is
display-only and shows its source (`effort_source` in `/api/state`);
on ACP it stays hidden while the session offers no effort level.
The read side is unchanged: with no swarm value an agent runs an
existing `hyperhive-effort` file, else its agent.nix effort, else
medium. Existing files are not touched.
Refs #5034
The per-agent web UI no longer sets the model: the `/model` slash
command, the model picker, `POST /api/model`, `Bus::set_model` and the
`hyperhive-model` writer are gone. The model chip is display-only and
shows where the model comes from (`model_source` in `/api/state`). The
model is set on the swarm (swarm UI agents page, `swarmctl agent
inference set`).
The read side is unchanged: with no swarm value an agent runs its
agent.nix model, else an existing `hyperhive-model` file, else haiku.
Existing files are not touched.
With the picker gone, its model list goes too: `available_models` in
`/api/state`, the ACP model-list filter, and the harness's global
`HIVE_AVAILABLE_MODELS`. The subagent daemon keeps its own
`HIVE_AVAILABLE_MODELS` from mcp.nix, and the `availableModels`
assertion stays.
`/effort` (command, picker, route, file) is unchanged.

config-changes.md § Meta flake, hive-c0re nix comments and the meta.rs/exec.rs
doc comments still described the declared agent-<n> input as a forge-hosted
git+http repo; meta.rs renders git+file://<applied>.
advance_applied_main refused every rev that does not descend from
applied/main, including an ancestor of it. Ancestors arrive in normal
operation: swarm-controller queues each merge's TriggerDeploy as an
independent node with no resource or edge between them and spawns each
runnable node on its own task, so two merges of one agent can publish in
either order; the meta-update cascade fast-forwards applied/main to the
forge's main on its own; and the webhook handler does not dedup a
redelivered merge event. Since a refusal now logs at ERROR and fires the
`hh-config-rev-refused` alert, each of those would page as a refusal.
An ancestor is now RevAdvance::Superseded, logged at info, nothing queued.
Only a rev that has diverged (neither descendant nor ancestor) is refused.
Refs #4851
A deploy request whose rev hive-c0re refuses (fetch failed, or the rev
does not descend from applied/main) no longer tries to comment on the PR
that merged it. Off the forge host that attempt always failed with "forge
core token absent". The refusal now logs at ERROR, message unchanged, and
the new `hh-config-rev-refused` Grafana rule fires on it.
Deleted with the posting: actions::post_rev_deploy_failure_to_pr, the
whole forge/pr_comment.rs (config_repo, merged_pr_for_commit,
post_pr_comment), and ReaderToken::value, whose only caller was
merged_pr_for_commit.
Refs #4851
priv_client::list_containers now waits at most 30s (LIST_WAIT) for
hive-priv's `nixos-container list`, via the existing `within` helper. Its
periodic callers (crash_watch, agent_sockets, swarm_agent_status, wanted,
mcp_sockets, swarm_status via container_view) already treat an Err as a
skipped cycle, so a hung listing no longer stops their loops for good.
lifecycle::is_running / unit_state run `systemctl is-active` with
kill_on_drop and a 10s timeout (IS_ACTIVE_TIMEOUT); a timeout warns and
reads as not-running / UnitState::Other, the same as a systemctl that
could not be spawned. The new lifecycle::running_state returns None for
that case, and crash_watch keeps the agent's previous observation on None
so a hung systemctl is neither reported as a crash nor as a recovery.
`call` itself and every mutating op (start/stop/destroy/send-snapshot/
daemon-reload) stay unbounded.
Closes#5061
The reseed bail text, the `ensure_all` doc, the forge module doc and a
rebuild comment still described hive-c0re mirroring the applied config to
`agent-configs/<name>`. State what the code does now; scope the
config-changes doc to swarm-created agents and say what a legacy agent
whose repo has no `main` gets.
Refs #4851
Per the operator's ruling on #4851 (option (a)): the hive holds no
write identity on the forge, so the `push_config` mirror of an applied
repo's tags and `main` to `agent-configs/<name>` is removed, along with
its `run_config_push` helper and its call in `sync_agent`.
Docs and comments that described the mirror now say that forge `main`
advances only by an operator's merge.
Refs #4851
Agents keep git worktrees and cargo target dirs under /home/<agent>,
which lives in the container rootfs and is deleted on destroy. They
can't move them under state/, because a claude started there walks up
into state/CLAUDE.md and takes on the agent's identity.
Add a per-agent work/ dir next to state/ on the host
(/var/lib/hyperhive/agents/<n>/work), bind-mounted RW at
/agents/<n>/work. hive-c0re creates it in ensure_state_dir and in
set_nspawn_flags (the rebuild path reaches only the latter), the
agent's activation chowns it to the agent user like state/ and
harness/, and measure_agent_disk counts it. destroy never touches the
agent root, so work/ survives it; purge removes the whole root, so
work/ goes with it.
Closes#4977
The operator admin sync now also takes homeserver admin away. It records
each user id it sends `make-user-admin` for in
`operator-matrix-admins.json` under the controller's state directory
(written to a temporary file and renamed over it; a missing file is an
empty set). On each pass, a recorded account that is no longer in
authelia's `admins` group but is still joined to `#admins:<server>` is
sent `!admin users force-leave-room <user> <admin room id>` as `@swarm`,
over the same `/_matrix` path the grant uses. Leaving that room is what
ends tuwunel admin.
It never revokes an admin it didn't grant, `@swarm`, tuwunel's server
user (`@conduit:<server>`), an agent's account (the store's
`hive-agent-*` cert roles, the same roster the agent account mint uses),
or anyone in the new `services.hyperhive.swarm.matrix.adminSync.ignoreUsers`
list. That list reaches the daemon as
`SWARM_CONTROLLER_MATRIX_ADMIN_SYNC_IGNORE_USERS`. It also never sends a
revoke that would leave `#admins` with no member besides `@swarm` and the
server user.
A revoke is sent at most once per account per controller process, like a
grant. A recorded account that is out of both the group and the room is
dropped from the file.
Closes#4799
config-changes.md (was approvals.md) describes config PRs, the meta flake
and helper events; the approval queue, its kinds, the withdraw path, the
job-queue dispatch and ApprovalResolved go. Every other page drops the
approvals table, endpoints, event, tool group, hivectl verbs, dashboard
section and the loose-end/cancel kind, and links to the renamed page.
Nothing submits an approval since scheduled prompts left hive-c0re, so the
queue only acted on rows written before that.
- hive-c0re: the approvals store and its migrations, approve/deny/
resolve actions, the ResolveApproval tail node (and meta_update's
approval_id), POST /api/approve and /api/deny, the approval views on
/api/state, the approval_resolved dashboard event, the orphan GC,
destroy/purge failing pending rows, and the approval rows in
get_loose_ends. DestroyBookkeeping loses the purge flag, which only
worded the approval-failure note.
- The CancelLooseEnd request goes: its only hive-c0re arm was the
approval one. cancel_loose_end handles reminder and todo in the harness.
- Wire types: hive_sh4re::approvals (ReminderStats moves to inbox),
LooseEnd::Approval, CancelLooseEndKind, HelperEvent::ApprovalResolved,
ToolGroup::Approvals, HostRequest::{Pending,Approve,Deny} and
HostResponse.approvals. HOST_SOCK_VERSION goes to 2 for the removed
field.
- hivectl loses the approvals verbs; docs/tools/hivectl-cli.md is
regenerated.
- The system prompt drops approval_resolved.
- The approvals table stays in broker.sqlite, unread, the same way the
operator_questions table was left when its store was removed.
- An `approvals` entry still in tool-groups.json is skipped with a warning
by ToolGroup::parse_list, like any unknown group.
- docs/agent-lifecycle/approvals.md is renamed to config-changes.md so the
code's doc pointers resolve; its content follows in the docs commit.
Drops docs/tools/scheduling.md and every description of hive-level
schedule creation, the worker, the removed MCP tools, the scheduling tool
group and the removed endpoints/events, pointing at docs/swarm/schedules.md.
- hive-c0re/README.md: drop deleted webhook_secret.rs from the module
list
- docs/swarm/README.md, docs/agent-lifecycle/approvals.md: rewrite
temporal wording (legacy/older-release phrasing) as current
behaviour
- docs/swarm/README.md: note that a lost closed delivery deploys
nothing and how the operator recovers
Rewrites the config-change flow around the forge merge and the
DeployRequest{rev} deploy, drops the MergeConfigPr approval, its deploy
DAG, the hive's `/webhook/` route and the `core` merge allowlist from
the docs, and states that operators join the `operators` team by hand.
Refs #4850
docs: the config-repo `main` merge gate (merge = `core` + team
`operators`, approvals = `operators`), the operator merge in the forge
UI and what it deploys, the hand-added `operators` membership, and that
with no eval-verify a failed rebuild leaves `applied/main` at the merged
commit. The swarm README lists the converged gate and the merge deploy.
`merged()` also requires `pull_request.base.ref == "main"`: the hive
deploys its config repo's `main`, so a merge into another branch would
only cost a forge fetch and a refusal comment (argus, #4894).
Refs #4850
Moves the "Harness systemd unit shape" section from
docs/agent-lifecycle/agent-roster.md into docs/turn-loop/README.md: it
describes the per-agent harness systemd unit (env vars, PATH wiring,
serviceConfig), which is turn-loop material, not roster material.
Fixes two facts while moving: the ExecStart package is `hive-agent`,
not `hyperhive` (no package by that name exists); and `ruth.nix`
doesn't set any forge subscription default — it only defaults
`services.hyperhive.agent.docs.enable`.
Updates the inbound pointers in docs/turn-loop/config.md and the
module comment at nix/agent-modules/agent-service.nix.
Refs #3902
Per mara's #4879 review (89815): the system has no agent hierarchy,
just a flat set scoped by the capability store, so the filename no
longer matched. The file already read "Agent roster & privileges"
after the earlier facts pass; rename it to match, and update the
four inbound references (docs/README.md, coordinator.md, config.md,
agent-service.nix).
mcp.md:
- matrix and subagent extra MCP servers are http (hive-matrix-daemon,
hive-subagent-daemon), not stdio; screen is the one entry that still
uses the stdio default (nix/agent-modules/matrix.nix:290-297,
screen.nix:22-25)
- set_status is always-on, not meta-group-gated; mark_todos_done (also
always-on) was undocumented (hive-sh4re/src/permissions.rs:151,
hive-agent-mcp/src/mcp/mod.rs:425)
- System messages: HelperEvent has 3 variants, not the 8 previously
listed; ApprovalResolved/ContainerCrash routing and the swarm-wide
NATS notices stream (swarm_notices.rs) replace the old per-agent
todo-wake description for rebuilt/killed/destroyed/logged_in/needs_login
- get_loose_ends's approval rows are manager-only; PendingMessages and
UnreadMatrix were missing from the description
(hive-sh4re/src/inbox.rs:127-184)
- subagent spawning runs on hive-runtime (claude or ACP), not
claude-only (hive-subagent-mcp/src/session.rs:77)
- Waking section: matrix/bash/forge all moved to the in-agent todo
socket; the host Wake request has no built-in caller left today
agent-hierarchy.md:
- distinguished the swarm-wide agent roster (swarm-controller's
identity store, authoritative) from the hive-local topology.json
(a derived, reconciled cache scoping ManageRootAgent's bind-mounts),
linking README's framing
- noted services.hyperhive.ruthless (a hive can run with no manager at
all)
- Wire-protocol bullet: the only privileged Request variants left are
the scheduling ops; Kill/Start/Restart/Update/GetLogs don't exist on
this socket
- Prompt/tools: prompt::render hardcodes the agent role for every
container today (role:manager blocks are dead code); the tool
allow-list has no Flavor switch, it's HIVE_TOOL_GROUPS same as any
agent
Not touched: agent-hierarchy.md:140-200 (Harness systemd unit shape,
kept in place — see PR follow-ups) and docs/agent-lifecycle/approvals.md
(blocked on #4853).
An operator now links an agent's external forge account (label, base URL,
token) in the swarm UI. swarm-controller stores it at
swarm/agents/<agent>/forge/<label>. There is no index: the store's
listing of the agent's forge/ directory is the set of accounts.
In the agent, hive-agent-forge-accounts (oneshot + 2-minute timer, as
the agent user, under its own store certificate) lists
swarm/agents/<agent>/forge/ with the `list` #4866 grants an agent on its
own metadata subtree, reads each account, and writes
<state>/forge-<label>-token and forge-<label>.json in the names and shape
hive-forge -f already reads. An empty listing (a 404, which `bao kv list
-format=json` answers with `{}` and an empty stderr) is zero accounts; a
denial or an unreachable store fails the unit. It never deletes: files
for labels not listed, including ones the hive wrote, stay as they are.
Removed: the dashboard FORGES tab (credentials.js/html section and its
CSS), hive-c0re's extra_forges.rs and its routes, priv_client's
extra-forge calls, and hive-priv's WriteAgentExtraForgeAccount /
DeleteAgentExtraForgeAccount with their helpers. The GITHUB tab and
WriteAgentGithubToken stay.
Also: persistence.md's matrix avatar note names the exit-75 restart on a
changed account listing, not the dashboard, as what brings a linked
account up.
Refs #4348
hive-matrix-daemon now learns which external matrix accounts it has from
the swarm secret store, under the agent's own certificate, and the hive
push chain for matrix is gone.
The daemon lists swarm/agents/<agent>/matrix/ (the `list` its policy
grants on its own metadata subtree), reads each account's homeserver
from its credential, and brings the accounts up with their tokens from
the store. Every two minutes it lists again and exits with 75 when the
set of linked accounts changed; the unit restarts on 75 without counting
a failure. A listed name whose credential reads as absent is skipped and
logged once. At start it removes the matrix-token-<a> /
matrix-account-<a>.json pairs a hive delivered (a sidecar marks a pair
as delivered; a declared tokenFile keeps its token).
Removed: CredentialNotice and the $SWARM.credential.* subject and NATS
grant, the controller's publish and its queue precondition on the PUT
route, hive-c0re's credential subscription arm and workers/credential.rs,
priv_client::write_agent_matrix_token, hive-priv's WriteAgentMatrixToken
and its helpers, and the daemon's state-dir account discovery.
Kept: WriteAgentGithubToken and the external-forge path
(WriteAgentExtraForgeAccount, extra_forges.rs) are untouched, and a
declared matrixAccounts tokenFile is still read when the store has no
token for that account.
Refs #4348
swarm-controller's POST /api/agents now refuses (409) a name the swarm
has already placed on a different hive: a non-Destroyed declaration in
that hive's wanted state, or a SetAgentWanted node still queued for it.
The same name on the same hive is that agent being re-created and goes
through. A wanted state that cannot be read refuses (503/500) instead of
reading as "placed nowhere". Creations are serialised from that read to
the graph insert so two concurrent creations of one name cannot both
pass.
Hive-level creation is removed: hivectl `agent create` / `request-create`,
HostRequest::Spawn / RequestSpawn, the dashboard POST /api/request-spawn
route, and ApprovalKind::Spawn with its approve/resolve arms and the
approval-carrying `templates::spawn`. The swarm path (deploy request or
wanted-state sweep -> queue_first_deploy -> templates::first_deploy) used
none of them. Old `spawn` approval rows are skipped by collect_lenient,
as `init_config` rows were in a3b672d1.
policy.rs's comment on agent_object_name stated swarm-wide name
uniqueness as a fact; it now says where it is enforced and what that
check cannot see.
Refs #4396
/etc/tmpfiles.d/hyperhive-agents.conf was a boot-time backstop (#2290)
that pre-created every agent's bind sources. The start preamble already
creates them for every c0re-driven start, and on this host only hive-c0re
starts agent containers. The file was also the reason the socket dir's
owner had to be declared there, which is how it spent its life at
`0777 root root` whenever the uid could not be resolved (#4742).
- hive-priv gains `EnsureAgentSocketDir { name }`, called from
`set_nspawn_flags` in every start path. It creates
`/run/hive-agent/<name>` `0751 root:root` with mkdirat relative to an
O_DIRECTORY|O_NOFOLLOW fd for the parent. An existing entry has to be a
directory (fstatat AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW); anything else is refused, and a
directory is left alone. hive-c0re's own create_dir_all went: its /run
is read-only under ProtectSystem=strict.
- The container's `hive-agent-user-migrate` activation chowns that dir to
the agent user and sets 0751, the same way it already handles state/ and
harness/. It refuses a symlink or non-directory there, since `test -d`
and chmod follow links. No host-side passwd parse, and no window where
the dir is world-writable.
- `/run/hyperhive/agents/<name>` stays created by hive-c0re itself
(`ensure_agent_runtime_dir`). It holds the `mcp.sock` that hive-c0re
binds as hive-core, so it must not become root- or agent-owned.
- The `/run/hive-agent` parent is declared in hive-priv.nix, `0755
root:root`, instead of hive-gateway's hive-core rule. hive-priv is its
only writer now, and hive-priv's ReadWritePaths needs it to exist.
- The manager start in `ensure_root_agent` now goes through
`converge_start_preamble` + `start_with_fallback`. It was a bare start,
so after a reboot the manager's bind sources existed only because of the
tmpfiles file, and its limits drop-in did not exist at all.
- Removed: `sync_tmpfiles`, `agent_uid_gid` / `parse_passwd_uid_gid`,
`priv_client::sync_agent_tmpfiles`, `AgentTmpfilesEntry`, the tmpfiles
body builder and their tests, plus the three call sites.
- Legacy: hive-priv unlinks the file at every start, ignoring ENOENT.
`SyncAgentTmpfiles` stays one release as a payload-ignoring variant that
does the same unlink and returns Ok, for an older hive-c0re.
Salvaged from #4752: the boundary.md correction that nginx only dials,
because ProtectSystem=strict makes its /run read-only.
Behaviour change: a manual `nixos-container start h-<name>` right after a
reboot, before hive-c0re has started that agent, now fails on a missing
bind source instead of starting.

The header comment grew to 39 lines across two audit-driven rounds,
over the 30-line comment-block-lint max. Trimmed to 30: merged the
value-as-argument rationale with its /proc/cmdline justification into
one paragraph, cut the usage example to one call instead of two, and
condensed the args paragraph — no content dropped, just restatement.
persistence.md's first-boot-migration marker paragraph used "it is"
and "there is not" — vale's Microsoft.Contractions rule (this repo's
config) wants the contracted forms, and "is not" also collides with
"is nothing" as a literal substring, which is what actually tripped
the error. Reworded to "it's" / "there's nothing", no meaning change.
Lint-only: no script logic changed, gates re-run below are all lint
checks (no module-eval, no cargo).

Four host glue units fetched a secret from swarm-bao and rendered it
with `> path; chmod`: a reader racing the write could see a truncated
file, and briefly one at the wrong mode before the chmod landed.
glue-matrix-bao-token.nix, glue-queue-agent-credential.nix (both
files), swarm-grafana.nix and swarm-otel.nix now write to a same-
directory temp file, set its final mode/owner, then `mv -f` it over
the target — a shared `atomic_write_secret` helper
(nix/host-modules/lib/atomic-write-secret.nix) so the five call sites
share one implementation.
The first-boot `/root/.claude` migration in nix/agent-modules/user.nix
wrote its done-marker unconditionally, so a failed `cp` (disk full,
permission error) left the marker behind and no boot ever retried the
copy. The marker is now written only when there was nothing to
migrate or the copy succeeded; `cp -an`'s no-clobber semantics already
make a retry after a partial copy safe.

The integration, tool, persistence and setup pages described hive-c0re
minting each agent's token into its state dir. They now describe the
swarm's appservice, its admin sender, the controller's mint and pass, the
daemon's store read and re-start timer, and the two new credential rows.
ruth's matrix account comes from the same pass once she holds the store
identity the setup page already has the operator mint.
Every hive with hyperhive enabled ran its own hive-forge container, and
its gateway answered forge.<swarm> with its own bridge IP, so on a
multi-host swarm each hive talked to its own forge.
deploy.forgejo.enable defaults to false and allSwarmServices sets it with
mkDefault, like authelia and bao; singleHostSwarm gets it through that.
The forge's OIDC client moves to a glue module gated on authelia, so a
split authelia/forge swarm still registers it. CI now requires the forge
on the same host, and the controller's forgeTokenFile defaults to null
where the forge is not.
