ef2dfbfb31 swarm-bao: reach the store through a TLS passthrough, not a vhost
An agent container cannot dial the store's loopback listener: the bridge
to-loopback DROP rule is there precisely to stop that, and the store
authenticates every reader by client certificate, so the usual answer —
a gateway vhost — is the one shape that cannot work. A terminating proxy
strips the certificate and bao sees nginx as the client for every hive.

nginx's stream module does not terminate. `ssl_preread` reads the SNI off
the ClientHello and splices the rest of the connection through byte for
byte, so bao completes the handshake itself and authenticates the client
it actually has. That is the no-vhost rule kept, not bent.

The listener binds the bridge IP rather than every address, because bao
already holds `127.0.0.1:<port>` in the same netns and a wildcard bind
there is EADDRINUSE — nginx would fail to start, taking the gateway with
it. Nothing moves as a result: the name already resolves two ways, so a
host-side reader still goes straight to loopback and an agent goes
through the passthrough, both on one `BAO_ADDR`.

Renders only inside the store's own `deploy.bao.enable` region; a host
that runs no store grows no listener and opens no port.

Per-agent certificates and per-agent policy are separate work.

815f977d7c swarm-grafana: one delivery route for the OIDC client secret
The previous commit left two delivery paths and a three-way gate:
`swarm-grafana-oidc-secret.service` copied authelia's minted plaintext
out of its host tree wherever the two were co-located,
`swarm-bao-grafana-oidc.service` read the same value from the swarm
secret store wherever they were not, and `ssoConfigured && (ssoLocal ||
haveClientIdentity)` decided whether Grafana got an OIDC block at all.

Delete the co-located path. The store reader is now THE delivery unit,
in every deployment — the publisher on authelia's host writes
`swarm/services/<id>/oidc/client` whether the reader is a network away
or in the container next door. The ruling behind it: the store exists so
a host holds ONE out-of-band secret, its client certificate, and reads
everything else with it. Skipping the store when the producer happens to
be local saves a round trip and costs a second delivery unit, a second
way for the file to be wrong, and a gate to choose between them.

The gate goes too, and both of its questions become assertions, scoped
to hosts that run Grafana:

- `swarm.authelia.url` must be set. `auth.disable_login_form` is
  unconditional — Grafana ships an admin/admin account on a public
  vhost — so dropping the OIDC block when the swarm names no IdP
  produced a container with no SSO and no password box, silently. An
  eval-time refusal naming the option is the only report that reaches
  anyone, the shape swarm-nats.nix already uses for the same option.
- `deploy.bao.clientCertFile` / `clientKeyFile` must be set. This
  replaces a warning that nothing reads back, and its message names both
  options and where the leaf comes from.

Fixtures follow. `grafanaWithAuthelia` gains the cert pair, because a
co-located host is a store reader like any other. The old
`grafanaRemoteAutheliaNoIdentity` is kept rather than deleted, renamed
`grafanaNoIdentity`: the shape is still reachable, only its deliverable
changed from silence to a refusal, and an arm now reads that refusal
back. Its mirror `grafanaNoSso` covers the other assertion, each fixture
wrong in exactly one way so an arm can name which refusal fired. Every
positive keeps an explicit negative — the one-delivery-unit arm asserts
the deleted unit is absent in both topologies rather than merely that
the store reader is present.

4aa982cc2a swarm-grafana: deliver the OIDC client secret through the secret store
Grafana's OIDC client secret only existed where authelia did. One
`ssoLocal` gate — `grafana.enable && authelia.enable` — decided the
client registration, the minted secret's delivery and the whole
`auth.generic_oauth` block, so a swarm whose authelia runs on another
host got Grafana with no SSO wiring at all. The local login form is
disabled unconditionally, so that is no way in.

Split the one gate into the two questions it was conflating:

- `ssoConfigured` — does this SWARM have an identity provider
  (`swarm.authelia.url`, which is swarm-wide and whose own description
  makes null mean "no SSO configured"). With a delivery route present
  this is what emits Grafana's OIDC block.
- `ssoLocal` — is authelia on THIS host, now spelled as the forge and
  matrix modules spell it. It decides only which unit delivers the
  secret.

Where authelia is elsewhere, `swarm-bao-grafana-oidc.service` reads the
secret from the swarm secret store, shaped after
glue-queue-agent-credential.nix: cert login fails loudly because a retry
fixes every state it fails on, the read degrades quietly because no
retry turns "no value there" into a value, and nothing writes a
stand-in. The producer is the publisher that already runs on authelia's
host, which gains the swarm's service clients beside the per-hive ones
at `swarm/services/<id>/oidc/client` — with the write grant in
swarm-bao.nix and the hive read grant in `policy::render` to match.

Registration moved to glue-grafana-oidc-client.nix. It has to be
declared where authelia's config is rendered, and swarm-grafana.nix's
config block hangs off this host running Grafana.

Two judgement calls stated rather than buried: a hive's read policy now
grants the whole `services` prefix, because a service's path names the
service and nothing swarm-wide records which hive runs it (cost recorded
in docs/trust-boundary/security.md); and the client is registered on any
authelia host, because no swarm-wide "this swarm has a Grafana" fact
exists to gate it on.

cb2c90f32e swarm: present tense + no-queue-coordinates wording
The queue's payload ceiling was justified by what the queue was about to
carry; it carries it now, so the comment says so.

The other two sites say "a hive with no queue configured". The swarm has
exactly one queue and a hive cannot lack it — only its coordinates, its
credential, or its ability to reach it. That wording is already used
everywhere else the absence is named; these two predate it.

The docs section on the agents' queue coordinates stopped at delivering
them and never said what the connection is for. It now names the subject
and the degrade rule, which is the part an operator reading an agent's
terminal at the swarm needs.

2989c5ccdb swarm: say "no queue coordinates", never "a hive with no queue"
The swarm always has exactly one queue; a hive can only lack its
address. Reworded every prose site this PR added that stated or
implied the opposite, to name what is actually absent (coordinates,
credential, or address) instead of the queue itself.

86652f051a swarm: wire the agents' queue coordinates and credential through the modules
The host end: `HIVE_C0RE_AGENT_QUEUE_CREDENTIAL_DIR` tells the daemon
where the reader unit put the files, and a new
`deploy.hive-controller.queue.agentNatsUrl` says where the queue is as an
agent *container* reaches it. That address defaults to the bridge one and
never to loopback — `statusPublish.natsUrl` beside it is loopback and
correct, because hive-c0re shares the host netns and an agent does not.
Paired with the swarm's token endpoint, gated together, and forwarded by
`hive_c0re::meta` as both an env var and an agent option: the harness
reads the variable at runtime, its unit is built from the option.

The agent end: `nix/agent-modules/queue.nix` declares that option pair
and, when set, has the harness unit inherit the two credentials by name.
Bare-id `LoadCredential=` is the terse form documented for inheriting
what the service manager received, and is non-fatal when the credential
is absent — which a hive whose publisher has not run yet needs.

No `HIVE_AGENT_OIDC_CA_FILE`: the meta flake already embeds the hive CA
and the swarm root into each container's trust store at build time, and
reqwest's rustls backend verifies against it.

f8dd737456 swarm: run the agent queue credential reader before hive-c0re
Ruled: swarm-bao-queue-agent.service must run before hive-c0re.service
and be wanted (not required) by it, so no agent container renders
ahead of the reader's attempt at its credential. An unreachable store
delays hive-c0re's start by the reader's own start-limit window rather
than failing it outright.

b8157cb08e swarm: read the agent queue credential out of the store onto the hive host
The publisher on the authelia host has been writing
`secret/swarm/hives/<hive>/queue/agent` — the OIDC client secret agent
containers present to the swarm queue, plus the client id it belongs to —
and nothing read it. This is the reader: a oneshot `swarm-bao-queue-agent`
that logs in with the host's certificate and lands the two fields as two
files under `deploy.hive-controller.queue.agentCredentialDir`, the secret
`0600` and the client id `0644`.

Two files rather than one because that is the consumer's shape:
`swarm_queue_client::QueueConfig::from_env` takes the secret as a path and
the client id as a value, so the split here is what keeps the next slice
from parsing anything.

Same shape as the store's first reader, `glue-matrix-bao-token.nix` — a
cert login that fails loudly under `Restart=on-failure` because every state
it fails on is one a retry fixes, then reads that degrade quietly because no
retry turns "no value there" into a value. Unlike the matrix token there is
no local fallback and none is possible, so absent files mean this hive's
agents do not connect, which is the ordinary state of a swarm before the
publisher has run.

Nothing consumes the files yet and this unit is ordered `Before=` nothing.
The next slice bind-mounts them into agent containers through hive-c0re and
adds the ordering edge along with them.

bafda6e3d5 docs/sso: name Grafana as the exception, and say it is unconditional
sso.md's "What this doesn't do" list opened with "It doesn't disable
local login" without qualification, which was wrong for Grafana before
the previous commit and is wrong in a different way after it: Grafana now
disables the form for every deployment, not just where authelia happens to
be on the same host.

Names the exception, gives the reason a reader can act on (a default
`admin`/`admin` account on a gateway-published vhost), and states the
consequence plainly — SSO is the only door, so a dead provider locks
everyone out, which is why the OIDC role defaults to Admin.

0d25c0c9e6 docs/swarm: a hive entry's domain defaults, as the module says and the page already said once
README.md described `swarm.hives.<name>.domain` two ways, 100 lines apart. §
*Hive identity config* says it defaults to `<name>.<swarm.domain>` and shows a
names-only directory; § *The swarm's hive directory* called it "required per
entry and deliberately undefaulted" and wrote a domain into every entry.

The module sides with the first (`nix/host-modules/swarm.nix:125`):

    default = if swarmCfg.domain == null
              then "${name}.invalid"
              else "${name}.${swarmCfg.domain}";

and `:110` answers the stale paragraph's objection directly — the default is "a
derivation from two values an operator had to state explicitly (both are
required), not a guess".

Ordinary drift, two hours wide: `433b2940` wrote "deliberately undefaulted" at
20:44 on 08-05, `3b6576fa` added the default at 22:43 the same evening under the
message "a hive's domain comes out of the swarm directory". Both mine.

The example now shows what the convention actually looks like — names only, plus
one off-convention hive carrying the override, which is the case the option
exists for.

c234a32b36 docs/services: the store export is unconditional, and there is no eval refusal
`5478e0bf` (`fix(#3554)`) made both store exporters unconditional and removed
the "somewhere to send" assertion, and touched no documentation — its diffstat
is four `nix/` files. `services.md` § *Telemetry collector (OTEL)* still
described the old shape in two places.

① "it writes the store above and exports to `otel.endpoint`, doing both when
both are configured" — only the upstream is conditional. `exporterNames`
(swarm-otel.nix:231) always carries the store exporter, with a comment saying
why: `deploy.victoriametrics.enable` means "this host RUNS the store", and a
swarm has one either way.

② "With neither `otel.endpoint` nor the store enabled, this module refuses the
collector at eval" — that assertion is gone. swarm-otel.nix:693 records the
removal at the head of the assertions list, and `5478e0bf`'s message states it
was a ruling rather than an oversight: a collector on a host of its own is a
supported shape, so refusing to build it would have made the fix illegal
exactly where the bug bit hardest. `git grep` finds no surviving assertion of
that shape.

The replacement paragraph states the invariant an operator can act on — the
exporters have no gate, the stores are addressed by swarm name — and keeps the
failure it prevents, since "an absent exporter is not an error" is the part that
made the old bug silent.

The stale claim dates to `80c9118f` (2026-08-18), 13 days before the behaviour
changed under it.

78699ebd5a docs/secrets: the collector's secret copy has one condition, not two
secrets.md said the swarm collector's OIDC secret is copied "when authelia is
enabled on this host and something published is being scraped; otherwise no
secret is needed and none is placed". The second condition left the tree in
5478e0bf (#3554): `swarm-otel-oidc-secret` and the client registration it
delivers for are both `lib.mkIf deployCfg.authelia.enable`, and
`publishedScrapeTargets` appears in neither guard. swarm-otel.nix:589 says why
in as many words — authelia refuses a bearer-authz client with no audience,
which is what the old guard was for, and the push audiences are unconditional,
so there is now always one.

The sentence survived because I rewrote the paragraph around it a day later
(8cba57e0) for the collector-elsewhere case and carried the clause through.

What a reader loses: with authelia on and nothing published, the page promises
the delivery is inert. It is not — the unit runs, waits a bounded 120s for
authelia's mint, and fails the collector's container start if the secret never
appears. So the case documented as quiet is one that can fail a boot, and the
operator debugging it has a page saying this path was not taken. The
replacement states the single real condition and that failure mode.

f22791b7a4 docs: clear the remaining error-level vale lints
Per #4128 (mara: allow-everywhere false positives go in a central
list, otherwise fix in source). Testing surfaced better fixes than
the plan posted on the issue:

- 5x Microsoft.Contractions 'that is' idiom false positives: adding
  the missing comma ("that is, ...") both reads better and satisfies
  the rule's own negative-lookahead, so no suppression is needed at
  all. Fixed in docs/integrations/forge.md, docs/tools/forge.md,
  docs/tools/hivectl.md, docs/web-ui/dashboard.md, and
  swarmctl-cli.md's generated source (swarmctl/src/main.rs, doc
  comment regenerated via markdown-docs).
- persistence.md's 'is not' matching inside 'is nothing': reworded to
  'there'\''s nothing' rather than add any exception -- dodges the trap
  and is a genuine contraction besides.
- ca.md's 'it is' matching inside the already-correct 'it isn'\''t':
  tried a central .vale.ini TokenIgnores entry first per the
  allow-everywhere framing, but testing against the real file (not
  just a synthetic snippet) found it silently fails to suppress
  whenever markdown emphasis syntax appears earlier in the same
  file -- an offset-drift bug in how Vale applies TokenIgnores, not
  a config mistake. Reworded to "it'\''s not" instead, same fix
  shape as persistence.md.
- config.md's 3 genuine Microsoft.Avoid 'backend' exceptions (already
  flagged and accepted on #4139 -- an actually-pluggable LLM API
  provider, matching the nix option's own name, not one internal
  system to name): scoped inline vale suppression around just that
  section, since this one really is context-specific rather than a
  rule bug.

Verified: fresh 'vale docs/ --minAlertLevel=error' is 0 errors AND
0 warnings (was 10 errors). nix fmt 0 changed beyond the edits
themselves. pre-push lints (tracker-tag/comment-block/doc-pointer)
clean. cargo clippy -p swarmctl -- -D warnings clean. Diffed the
regenerated swarmctl-cli.md against the old copy to confirm only
the intended line moved.

9d02d81144 docs: name the actor instead of the vague 'we'/'our'
Per mara's ruling on hyperhive#4041 (Microsoft.We): keep the rule enabled,
same treatment as the 'backend' rewrites. Traced all 21 genuine hits (4
gateway.md 'Let's Encrypt' hits are a substring-match false positive, left
alone) to their actual referent: some name a specific component already
established nearby in the same doc (forge_notify, hive-github-notify's
poller, hive-forge, hive-agent/the harness, colors.css, the dashboard),
others were pure filler that adds nothing once dropped.

fab2a0dedc docs: fix genuine passive-voice hits in docs/swarm
Read all 94 write-good.Passive hits across docs/swarm/ (ca.md,
README.md, secrets.md, services.md, sso.md, ui.md) in context. 44 are
genuine catches with a nameable, usually already-established actor
(swarm-controller, authelia, swarmctl, the controller, the gateway,
this module, hyperhive itself, or 'the operator' for manual actions) —
rewritten to active. 50 are legitimate passives or false catches, left
alone: predicate-adjective state descriptions (is expected/misconfigured/
broken), negative-capability idioms (no X is needed/placed, can't be
Yed/listed/fetched), config-state conditionals (whenever/when X is
enabled/configured/set), requirement-list labels (is required),
'is tracked as' idiom, backward-looking changelog facts with no actor
(was removed/verified/introduced), ambiguous-actor statements left
conservatively alone (agents are created and destroyed — could be
hive-c0re or swarm-controller, doc doesn't say), and a couple of
deliberately-parallel idiom pairs.

Several sibling-inconsistency fixes: a passive clause sitting next to
an already-active sibling describing the same fact/mechanism (ca.md's
two-bullet consumer list, README's 4-item WireGuard-mesh bullet list,
README's controller-registers-hooks paragraph, sso.md's followed-a-302
sentence).

Verified via vale on the whole directory, diffed against main's exact
baseline (not just the Passive count): write-good.Passive 94 -> 50
exactly, every other category unchanged (1 pre-existing
Microsoft.Contractions error at services... at secrets.md:182,
8 TooWordy, 1 Microsoft.We, 1 Microsoft.FirstPerson — same counts,
same locations).

e82a735745 docs: fix write-good.So/ThereIs/Weasel lint findings
Fixes the "obvious ones first" slice of #4042 (mara: do the obvious
ones first) -- 81 hits across write-good.So, write-good.ThereIs, and
write-good.Weasel, all in docs/. Each is a genuine sentence rewrite
(lead with the real subject instead of "There is/are", drop a
sentence-initial "So ", replace a vague intensifier), not a blind
regex substitution -- read every hit in its real file context before
touching it.

3 of the 81 hits were in CI-generated CLI docs (docs/tools/{hivectl,
swarmctl,forge}-cli.md) -- fixed at the clap #[arg(...)]/doc-comment
source in hivectl/src/cli.rs, swarmctl/src/main.rs, and
hive-forge/src/verbs/repo_add_collaborator.rs, then regenerated via
each crate's `markdown-docs` subcommand so CI's freshness check stays
green.

Verified: fresh vale re-run shows 0 remaining So/ThereIs/Weasel hits
and no new hits introduced (983->982, exactly the one incidental fix
this pass also picked up at docs/scheduler/observability.md:48).
cargo fmt --check and clippy clean on the three touched crates.

Remaining write-good backlog (Passive: 726, TooWordy: 207) is
judgment-heavy and left for a follow-up slice of #4042, not bulk-
rewritten here.

01ce968fb6 nix: split statusPublish and the otel secret into deploy.*
Slices 8 and 9 of the swarm/deploy split, and the last two.

statusPublish had three coordinates under one namespace. Two of them
are this machine's — where the queue listens *as seen from here*, and
where its client secret sits on this disk — so they move to
`deploy.hive-controller.statusPublish.*`, the namespace of the daemon
that is their only reader. `tokenEndpoint` is the swarm's one address,
so it stays. That leaves `swarm.statusPublish` holding a single option:
a legitimate split, not a botched move.

The all-or-nothing assertion now spans both namespaces. It is repointed
in both its condition and its message, and the message spells all three
paths in full so an operator is never told to set two options under a
path that only has one. `environment.nix`'s guard and the value beside
it likewise read different namespaces on purpose.

The collector's secret moves the same way, for the same reason, to
`deploy.swarm-otel.*` — `enable` already lives there. That also retires
one of the eight cross-namespace assignments tracked in #4048: the
delivery unit set a `swarm.*` value under a `deploy.*` gate, and now
sets a `deploy.*` value under one.

module-eval gets a fixture per slice. `otelRemoteAuthelia` already set
the collector secret through its pre-rename path, so it becomes slice
9's old-path case as it stands — left spelled that way deliberately,
with a comment, so it is not read later as a missed site.

That fixture also turned out to be describing an impossible hive: it
said authelia lives elsewhere without saying where, so the
authenticator interpolated a null `swarm.authelia.url` into its
`token_url`. Nothing to do with the rename, and invisible to the
existing case over the same fixture, which reads `? auth` and `elem` —
both stop at names and never force the extension's value. Given the
address a remote-IdP deployment has.

Verified: 49 -> 51 properties, all holding.

ec9ee866db docs: fix merge-conflict fallout + a fresh Contractions/Auto typo from the merge
Resolving the 5 branches (contractions/foreign/auto/quotes/hyphens) onto
current main surfaced a few things beyond plain conflict markers:

- docs/scheduler/coordinator.md had 'auto-noops' turned into the
  malformed 'autanoops' by the auto-hyphens batch -- fixed to
  'autonoops'.
- main had moved (new prose, some option renames) since the batches
  were generated against an older commit, so a handful of merge
  conflicts needed both sides combined (keep main's updated content,
  reapply the lint fix on top) rather than a plain pick-one resolution.
- A few genuinely new Microsoft.Contractions hits had appeared in the
  moved-forward main and in content pulled in wholesale during
  conflict resolution -- fixed the 2 real ones
  (docs/integrations/forge.md, docs/turn-loop/claude-invocation.md).
- The other 'new' Contractions hits vale reports now
  (docs/integrations/forge.md:281, docs/tools/forge.md:260,
  docs/tools/hivectl.md:239, docs/tools/swarmctl-cli.md:28,
  docs/web-ui/dashboard.md:457) are a side effect of the Foreign
  batch's own 'i.e.' -> 'that is' substitution: vale's Contractions
  rule can't tell 'that is' used as a copula (contractable) from 'that
  is' used as a parenthetical clarifier (not contractable, would break
  the sentence -- 'that's it raced the merge' isn't English). Left
  those alone; noted in the PR description.

Final vale count on this branch: the only Microsoft.Contractions/
Foreign/Auto/Quotes/Hyphens hits left are the known legitimate skips
(ALL-CAPS/bold emphasis, vale's own false positives, and this
Foreign/Contractions interaction) -- verified with a fresh vale run.

Moved 27 instances of periods and commas from outside closing quote marks
to inside, following American-style punctuation placement. Changes span
across ~15 documentation files including integration, process, scheduler,
trust-boundary, and web-ui docs.

05cf8e8276 docs: remove hyphens from auto-X compounds per Microsoft.Auto style
Fixed 72 hyphenated 'auto-X' compounds across the docs by deleting
the hyphen to match Microsoft style guide (autogenerated, autoregistration,
autodiscovery, etc). Preserved original capitalization throughout.

Covered 26 documentation files in docs/, including README.md, agent-lifecycle,
integrations, scheduler, networking, process, tools, trust-boundary,
turn-loop, and web-ui sections.

4f2d1d281a docs: fix Microsoft.Foreign hits (e.g./i.e. -> for example/that is)
Substitutes 'for example' for 'e.g.' and 'that is' for 'i.e.' per
Microsoft style, with no comma after the replacement -- this repo
never puts a comma after e.g./i.e. either, so the substituted phrase
matches that house style instead of vale's literal 'for example,'
suggestion.

Covers all 77 real hits (72 from the initial vale pass + 5 more of the
same pattern found on a follow-up vale run). None of the flagged
instances were sentence-initial, so there's no capitalization concern
here.

Verified via a fresh vale run: 0 remaining Microsoft.Foreign hits.
Full accounting in /agents/iris/state/haiku-batches/foreign-report.md.

Review pass on top of the previous commit (85a94671) turned up three
real issues its own vale-only verification didn't catch:

- 'has not' -> 'hasn't' fired inside 'has nothing', corrupting
  docs/swarm/README.md into 'hasn'thing to say upward'. Restored
  'has nothing'.
- ~44 hits where the original text was genuinely sentence-initial
  ('It is', 'That is', 'They are', 'What is', 'Do not', ...) got
  contracted in lowercase, silently de-capitalizing the start of a
  sentence. Checked each one's real surrounding text and capitalized
  the ones that needed it.
- Confirmed (by reading the actual text, not just trusting vale) that
  the 3 remaining 'is not'/'has not'/'it is' hits after those fixes are
  vale's own false positives: it matches these as a bare substring with
  no trailing word boundary, so it also fires on 'is nothing', 'has
  nothing', and the already-correct 'it isn't'. Left those alone --
  there's no real issue in the text.

Re-verified with a fresh vale run: the remaining 17 hits are exactly
the union of the 14 legitimate ALL-CAPS/bold-emphasis skips from the
first commit and these 3 false positives. Full accounting in
/agents/iris/state/haiku-batches/contractions-report.md.

- 10 where words appear in ALL CAPS for deliberate emphasis (is NOT, do NOT, etc.)
- 4 where text could not be safely located due to markdown formatting or column position

Applied via systematic scan with checks for fenced code blocks, inline code spans,
and intentional caps. Preserves sentence-initial capitalization throughout.

9c09653603 deploy: move authelia's three host paths out of swarm.authelia
`usersFile`, `hostClientSecretDir` and `hostUsersFile` are filesystem
paths that only exist on the machine running the `swarm-authelia`
container. A hive that does not run it has nothing at any of them, so
they fail the swarm-wide test the namespace's header states.

`usersFile` is a path *inside* the container and still belongs on the
deploy side: a path's scope is the scope of the filesystem it names, and
that filesystem is this host's container root.

The two `host*` options are `readOnly` and derived, so nothing can set
them through the rename shims — those serve readers. The shims are still
required: `mkRenamedOptionModule` is what keeps an out-of-tree module
reading the old path resolving at all.

Seven reads went through an alias rather than a full path
(`autheliaCfg.hostClientSecretDir` in five modules, `.hostUsersFile` in a
sixth, `swarmCfg.authelia.hostClientSecretDir` in a seventh). Every one
of those files already binds `deployCfg`, so the repoint needed no new
alias. Four more sites were prose, including one in `docs/`, which no
grep restricted to `nix/` would have found.

b6df0b4afc deploy: move grafana's datasources, plugins and socket out of swarm.grafana
`swarm.*` is what a hive needs to be a *client* of the swarm. For Grafana
that is the package, the name it is served under, the port its `/metrics`
is re-served on, and the OIDC client it is registered as. Where its
datasources point, which plugins sit in its store path and the directory
it shares a socket with nginx through are decisions of the machine
running it, so datasourceUrl, logsDatasourceUrl, plugins and socketDir
move to `deploy.grafana.*`.

The two URLs are the interesting half. `swarm-grafana.nix`'s own summary
sentence said what stays is "its package, domain, and wiring" — and both
datasource URLs ARE wiring, so that sentence is rewritten with the move
rather than left asserting the opposite of what the module does. They
move because a URL's scope is the scope of what it ADDRESSES, not the
fact that it is a URL: docs/swarm/services.md already said datasourceUrl
"defaults to the store on this host, which is the only thing it can
reach", because that store binds loopback. The doc argues the move.

`socketDir` was already ruled host-side: the directory is shared between
the host's nginx and the container, and it is the same shape as the
options that moved in earlier slices.

Declared in swarm-grafana.nix under the `deploy.*` path, following
swarm-nats.nix; deploy.nix carries only the renames. One reader outside
the options block is prose: `metricsPort` STAYS and cross-referenced
`{option}services.hyperhive.swarm.grafana.socketDir`, which the split
makes a pointer to another rendered page — nixosOptionsDoc emits
swarm.md and deploy.md separately. Requalified, along with the one line
in docs/swarm/services.md that named a mover.

module-eval configures a hive through all four OLD paths and asserts a
rendered effect: the host tmpfiles rule that creates the socket
directory carries the fixture's custom path. The new paths evaluate fine
without the shims, so dropping them has to read as a clean tree; all
four are defined in the fixture, so removing any single shim fails the
eval rather than only the one the assertion reads.

81b9ddd189 deploy: move the queue's callout identity out of swarm.nats
`swarm.*` is what a hive needs to be a *client* of the swarm. For the
queue that is the ports it answers on, the client id it is registered
under, and the responder package. Whether this host mints its own
auth-callout keypairs and where the seeds sit are decisions of the
machine running it, so autoGenerateCallout, both seed files and both
public keys move to `deploy.nats.*`.

The two PUBLIC keys are the non-obvious half, so the reasoning is here
rather than in a comment nobody re-reads. A public key looks swarm-wide,
and docs/swarm/secrets.md says the user key "is published to every
client that connects" — which is true and does not make it swarm
config: peers RECEIVE it over the wire at connect time, they never
configure it. What decides the placement is that its seed is
unambiguously host-side, and splitting a keypair across two namespaces
is worse than either placement.

local-defaults.nix set `nats.autoGenerateCallout` from INSIDE
`config.services.hyperhive.swarm = { ... }`, so the bare prefix meant
`swarm.nats` and no full-path grep could see it. It moves out of that
block into a `deploy` statement rather than being rewritten in place.

swarm-controller.nix bound `natsCfg` and never used it — one mention,
no bare pass, while its sibling bindings have 5 and 10. Pre-existing
dead code, found by this slice's own alias sweep, removed with it.

Four assertion messages and five doc lines named moved options by a
short form (`nats.calloutUserSeedFile`) that is ambiguous now that both
`swarm.nats` and `deploy.nats` exist; one opened with
"services.hyperhive.swarm.nats has callout public keys", which the split
makes false. Prose that names a VALUE rather than a path — the `nk`
pipeline's `# -> calloutUserPublicKey` — is left bare on purpose.

module-eval configures a hive through all five OLD paths and asserts the
responder's delivery unit exists and interpolates the seed path.
`autoGenerateCallout` is deliberately FALSE there: that is what makes
the seed options decide `responderConfigured`, so the assertion is about
the seeds rather than about the auto-mint branch.

368f5d82aa deploy: move the wireguard mesh out of the namespace hives read
`swarm.*` is what a hive needs to be a *client* of the swarm; the mesh is
none of it. A peer needs this host's `wireguardEndpoint` -- the roster entry
in swarm.nix, which stays -- and nothing about the interface this host
brings up. The module already said so: "plain host networking that a machine
which runs no hive at all still needs."

All five options move, so the namespace relocates rather than splitting.
`listenPort` is the one that reads the other way: it is what this host
*binds*, while the port a peer *dials* lives inside `wireguardEndpoint`.

Declared in swarm-wireguard.nix under the `deploy.*` path, following
swarm-victorialogs.nix; deploy.nix carries only the renames, per its own
"a single file to delete when the deprecation window closes". Deliberately
NOT added to deploy.nix's own options block: every entry there is a swarm
service this host deploys, and the mesh is host networking.

hivectl/src/wg.rs generates the config snippet an operator pastes, so it
moves too -- otherwise the tool's own output trips the deprecation warning.

module-eval gains a case that configures a host through the OLD path and
asserts the rendered wg-hive interface, because the new path evaluates
fine without the shim: dropping it reads as a clean tree.

Fixes the 'genuine' bucket from #4040's triage: whitelist/allowlist
(6 hits across 5 files, including a heading rename in turn-loop/mcp.md
-- checked no anchor links reference it first) and the
simply/obvious/easy condescending-word cluster (10 of 13 hits, real
sentence-level rewrites rather than mechanical deletion so nothing
reads awkwardly).

Left 3 alex.Condescending hits untouched on purpose:
integrations/matrix.md:271 and process/conventions.md:442 both say
"non-obvious", swarm/ca.md:162 says "not obvious" -- alex matched
the substring "obvious" inside a negated phrase, the literal opposite
of condescending. Flagging these on the issue rather than silently
leaving them out.

None of the 13 `.prettierignore` entries appears here — verified by
intersecting the changed-file list against the ignore file, with a
control proving the intersection finds a match when one exists.

83bbd7a5ea swarm-ca: state the store-is-world-readable rule once, not three times
`docs/swarm/ca.md` said it under *Constraints on the material* and again
under *Distributing the root*; this module's header said it a third time,
directly above a line already pointing at that doc.

Measured: 6-gram intersection between the module's comments and the doc,
32 -> 6. The sentence now appears once in the tree.

Module header keeps what a reader editing this file cannot see from the
config: that one root makes cross-hive trust O(1), that the two
provisioning modes differ only in who writes the artifacts, and the ⚠️
that both root key and root cert are runtime files — the cert as a
consequence, and that one costs something real, since nothing whose trust
store is built at build time can name it. Everything behind those is a
`docs/x.md::Section` pointer with the heading checked to exist.

Dropped the O(n²)-per-peer-pinning story: the live reason is that one root
is O(1), and how it used to be configured is history.

In the doc, *Distributing the root* now links to *Constraints on the
material* rather than restating it. Intra-doc `#anchor` links are already
the convention there — 85 of them across `docs/`, 8 in `gateway.md` alone.

Comments + one doc paragraph; no behaviour change. Refs #3901.

9b14014077 docs(sso): document the machine surface, and stop restating it in nix
`docs/swarm/sso.md` described a person in a browser. The swarm's other
callers — the telemetry collector, the queue's auth-callout responder, each
hive's agents — hold no session and follow no redirect, and nothing operator-
facing said how they authenticate. Its relying-party table is forge and
matrix, both browser surfaces.

The new section carries what `swarm-authelia.nix` was holding in comments:
one client per hive because identity belongs to the directory, the audience
being that client id rather than a parallel naming scheme, and signed rather
than opaque tokens because the collector verifies offline against
`/jwks.json` while the queue introspects.

It also states the fail-closed rule once, in the place a reader looks before
touching a vhost: an error page answers 200, and `auth_request` reads any 2xx
as access granted. That shape has now appeared three times — this module's
`/api/` prefix and both of victorialogs' routes — which is what makes it
documentation rather than a comment.

The two comment blocks those replace shrink to the part that is genuinely
local: the submodule-typing reason these clients are a definition rather than
an append, and a loud warning against folding the machine prefix back into
`/`. The security warning stays at the site; only its consequence list moves.

Comments 495 -> 465 lines. Option `description` strings are untouched: they
are the source `pkgs.nixosOptionsDoc` renders into the operator's options
reference, so trimming one would delete published documentation rather than a
duplicate.

terminal rendering does not go in there i think"):

Moved 21 top-level docs/*.md files into 7 new topic subdirectories
(existing web-ui/, turn-loop/, swarm/, tools/, crates/ untouched):
  getting-started/  setup.md
  agent-lifecycle/  agent-hierarchy.md, approvals.md, persistence.md
  trust-boundary/   boundary.md, security.md
  integrations/     forge.md, matrix.md, github.md, knowledge.md
  networking/       gateway.md, network.md, snapshot-store.md
  scheduler/        jobq.md, coordinator.md, ci.md, observability.md
  process/          conventions.md, gotchas.md, pr-review-gate.md
  web-ui/           terminal-rendering.md (moved into the EXISTING dir,
                    per mara's correction to the original getting-started
                    guess -- it's UI implementation detail, not onboarding)

The physical layout now matches docs/README.md's own topical headers,
which already amounted to this taxonomy -- see the scoping comment on
the issue for the two findings that motivated this (a genuine
duplication between CLAUDE.md's old "Reading paths" list and
docs/README.md's grouped one, since drifted out of sync with each
other; and the flat layout not matching the grouping we already had).

Fixed every cross-reference this moved across the whole repo (~120
files: docs/ internal links at every depth, Rust doc comments, nix
module option docs, crate READMEs) -- verified two ways: a grep sweep
confirming zero remaining references to any old path, and a script
that resolves every markdown link in docs/**/*.md + CLAUDE.md +
README.md against the filesystem and reports anything that doesn't
exist (zero broken links).

Collapsed CLAUDE.md's "Reading paths" section (the duplicate) down to
a pointer at docs/README.md, now the single index. Rewrote
docs/README.md itself to use the new subdirectory paths and added the
one doc it was missing that CLAUDE.md's old copy had (pr-review-gate.md).

Classified all 22 docs/*.md files first via a haiku subagent (mara's
suggestion) on two axes -- proposed grouping and operator-vs-
implementation focus -- before finalizing the taxonomy; spot-checked
the report and found internal inconsistencies (its classification
table disagreed with its own summary section for a few files), so this
taxonomy is my original proposal + the one correction mara gave
directly, not a blind application of the subagent's table. The
operator-focus data it gathered is still useful for a follow-up
content pass (docs skewing 'mixed' rather than pure operator-facing),
not addressed in this PR -- structure only.

nix fmt clean, both pre-push lints clean.

8cba57e01c docs/swarm: the swarm collector need not share a host with authelia
This PR makes a swarm collector on a host with neither store — and no
authelia — an expressible deployment; `module-eval`'s `otelRemoteAuthelia`
case is exactly that. `secrets.md` still asserted the opposite in two
places, and one of them was the "hive elsewhere" column reading `n/a`.

The delivery unit is the convenience for the co-located case, not the
definition of it: whether the collector authenticates follows the
credential, never another service's placement.

694abf4439 swarm-bao: make the reader's identity declarable, not just the store's
`swarm-bao.nix` declared the store's half of the mTLS pair as options —
`serverCertFile`, `serverKeyFile`, `clientCaFile` — and left the reader's
half as a literal inside `glue-bao-tls.nix`, which only runs where
`deploy.bao.enable` is set. A hive that did not host the store therefore
could not read from it and could not be pointed at a certificate even
when one had been placed by hand.

Adds `clientCertFile`, `clientKeyFile` and `serverCaFile` beside their
three server siblings, `mkDefault`ed by the glue to the leaf it already
mints, and moves `glue-matrix-bao-token.nix` onto them. Its gate becomes
"this host holds an identity" rather than "the store is a neighbour",
and the unit ordering that names store-local units is now conditional --
`Requires=` on an absent unit fails the job.

`serverCaFile` is separate from `clientCaFile` on purpose: one is the
store choosing which readers to trust, the other a reader choosing which
store to trust. Self-signing collapses them to one file, which is a
property of that deployment and not of the pairing.

Closes #3855.

5aef2d1afc swarm: remove swarm.ui.domain, serve the UI on the swarm domain
The UI and the swarm-controller it fronts are one service to a reader and to a
certificate, so a separate option only ever created two spellings of one
address — and the controller's own public URL was built from one of them while
an allow-list entry named the other.

Removed rather than aliased. A config still setting it was pinning a name the
controller never used; an alias would preserve exactly that mismatch, so
`mkRemovedOptionModule` says so and fails the build.

⚠️ The option was TOTAL and `swarm.domain` is NULLABLE. That is not incidental:
`ui.domain` fell back to `swarm.invalid` so hive-network.nix's required-domain
assertion is what an operator sees, rather than a coercion error from a
consumer. Each site keeps that property its own way — swarm-ui binds a local
total (the idiom swarm-otel.nix already uses as `domainBase`), and the three
sites already gated on `deploy.swarm-ui.enable` gain `&& domain != null`, which
is stricter than a placeholder and puts no invented name into rendered config.

One behaviour change worth naming: `swarm.nix`'s certificate SAN list used to
receive the placeholder `swarm.invalid` on a null domain and now receives
nothing. `lib.optional` would otherwise have put a literal `null` in it.

Verified with `checks.module-eval` rather than `nix-instantiate --parse`: parse
proves syntax, and every failure this change could plausibly cause — a dead
binding, a renamed reference — is an evaluation error.

36082f991f otel: ship the journals the dashboard can already show
The dashboard's log surface is an allow-list: the four harness units in
every agent container, the hive-ci / hive-forge / hive-matrix machines,
and three host units. `swarm.otel.journaldUnits` only named the host
three plus forgejo — so the units an operator can read in the UI were
absent from the store they are supposed to be queryable in, and nothing
reports that, because a name that matches nothing is not an error.

Adds the four agent units, the CI runner and the homeserver. The agent
units are declared by the hive-c0re module rather than by the
agent-modules that define them: those are a guest evaluation and cannot
reach a host option.

3939303287 docs/swarm/secrets: the store's contents are no longer a host-level path
The table still described the raft data as living at /var/lib/swarm-bao on the
host, bind-mounted in -- the design the previous commit removes. An operator
following that row would back up a directory that no longer holds the store,
and would not know that a container destroy now takes the data with it.

States what is still host-level, since that is the part the row was actually
useful for: the TLS material and the PKCS11 token, both of which a host unit
writes and the container only reads.

daa6eb96f8 deploy: move the hive CA's knobs to deploy.hive-controller.tls
`services.hyperhive.tls.{stateDir,caValidityDays,leafValidityDays}` sat at
the top of `services.hyperhive`, which is meant to be everything about
hyperhive rather than the settings of one hive. Where the hive CA lives,
how long it lasts and how long the leaves it signs last are decisions of
the host holding the key — `deploy.*`, by the same rule as the switches
that moved before them.

`hive-controller` is hive-c0re's new name (mara on the issue), so the
knobs hang off the daemon that owns the CA rather than off a bare `tls`
at the root. mkRenamedOptionModule entries carry existing configs.

⚠️ Unlike the two switch renames, these names are NOT unique, so this was
swept by ALIAS BINDING rather than by identifier: hive-tls.nix alone holds
two options spelled `stateDir` — its own `cfg.stateDir` and the swarm CA's
`swarmCaCfg.stateDir`, four sites that must not move. Nine files bind an
alias to this config; the rename followed those bindings.

Two sites were invisible to the obvious check, and an unanchored sweep for
`hyperhive\.tls\b` is what found them: the option declaration (`= {` after
the path, so no trailing `.` or `;`) and the alias convention documented in
a comment in lib/hive-ca-trust.nix.

Also renamed the `<tls.stateDir>` shorthand in four docs and two Rust doc
comments, anchored on its delimiters — the new path contains the old one
as a substring, so an unanchored replace would have doubled the prefix.

d7a471043b docs/swarm: state the swarm-services rule once, not per service
mara on the PR: "remove the re stating of the 'follows allSwarmServices'
from the docs everywhere. services md is the central place to explain
what 'all swarm services' means (without listing them)".

Four sections each restated that their service derives from the switch —
authelia, the metrics pair, the log store, the swarm collector. The rule
now lives once at the top of services.md, in the form that carries the
information the four copies did: every optional once-per-swarm service
takes its enable from it.

The intro's enumeration goes with them. Naming the four services in
prose is a hand-maintained list of the same kind, one that a fifth
service does not update.

That also makes an exception legible: swarm-ui's line saying it derives
from the controller rather than from this switch now reads as a real
difference instead of one paragraph disagreeing with four others.

97a7b518ea deploy: rename enableAllLocalDefaults to deploy.singleHostSwarm
Same defect as the switch below it, one tier up: it sat at the TOP of
`services.hyperhive`, a namespace that is meant to be everything about
hyperhive rather than the settings of a single hive. Whether this box is
the whole deployment is as per-host as a decision gets.

The name follows mara's sentence for what it means — "everything in the
swarm is running on this host" — rather than naming its mechanism.
"Defaults" was doing no work: it is not a defaults toggle, it is a claim
about where the swarm lives, and the pair now reads as the containment it
already was, singleHostSwarm implying allSwarmServices plus this hive.

One site was a setter rather than a reference: module-eval's `allLocal`
fixture passes an attrset merged into `services.hyperhive`, so its key
carries the path and had to become `deploy.singleHostSwarm`. A rename by
bare identifier is right for the twelve prose mentions and wrong for
exactly this one, which is worth knowing before the next rename.

585269b8a3 deploy: rename swarm.enableRequiredServices to deploy.allSwarmServices
Both halves of the old name were wrong about the subject. The services
are required of the SWARM, not of the host, and the option says whether
THIS host runs them — so it described the wrong thing and sat in the
namespace that has to be identical on every host. The new name is mara's
own phrasing of what it means: "deploy all swarm level services on this
host".

mkRenamedOptionModule carries existing configs, read-side references
included, so this warns rather than failing to evaluate.

Three sites were not just the identifier:

- local-defaults.nix set it inside `config.services.hyperhive.swarm =
  { … }`. It moves out as a path beside the other deploy.* setter rather
  than into a second `deploy = { … }` attrset — the warning that file
  already carries about `swarm` applies to any second definition of the
  same parent.
- swarm-required-services.nix bound only `swarmCfg`, now unused; it binds
  and reads `deployCfg`.
- Two comments in that file described a half-migrated state, where the
  switch asserted some `swarm.*.enable` toggles and some `deploy.*` ones.
  Every one of them has been `deploy.*` for several slices now.

c1b7be1135 docs/swarm: the store's init step, its identity, and its first reader
bao operator init stays manual: it emits recovery keys and a root token,
so automating it would put the disaster-recovery material on the host it
is the recovery path for. The unseal note is split by seal mode, since
pkcs11 unseals itself and only shamir needs an operator per boot.

secrets.md said nothing reads the store and nothing mints its identity;
setup.md said the deployment must supply the certificate. All three are
false now. They name the first reader, why that credential and not
authelia's OIDC secret, that every failure path leaves the local token
in place, and that the minted paths are mkDefaults an operator's own
paths beat.

Delta sweep clean: 0 hits for useSelfSigned / acme / swarm-services /
'nothing reads' / 'issued and unused'; control returns 12 for
serverCertFile. The single 'no reader' hit is a module-eval comment
describing the absence arm.

4f4f1ec3ee deploy: retention is the store host's decision, not the swarm's
Both retentionPeriods move to deploy.<store>.retentionPeriod. Measured
before moving: each is read exactly once, in the container definition of
the module that deploys the store, and no client hive consults either --
so they are options on the auto-deployed service rather than something
every host has to agree on.

What stays in swarm.* is what a client needs to reach the store: the
package, the name it answers on, the port. Both modules said "what stays
here is its package, domain, retention and wiring" in their options-block
comments; retention no longer does, so those say so.

Renames go in deploy.nix with the rest, so the whole move keeps one home
and one file to delete when the deprecation window closes.

The three supported shapes were described in pieces across the swarm
docs, so a reader assembling them got a different answer depending on
which page they landed on. They live in services.md now, and the other
pages point at it.

Split out of #3719 at mara's request: that PR also rewrites the
snapshot-store doc, which is a separate argument.

a05d686875 docs: split swarm/deploy options into their own reference pages
services.hyperhive.swarm.* used to carry both swarm-wide facts (name,
domain, hives, ca) and the 'does THIS host run it' toggles for every
swarm service. deploy.nix already split those toggles out into their
own services.hyperhive.deploy.* namespace; this is the docs-side
follow-up now that swarm.* is genuinely swarm-wide-only.

nix/docs/default.nix: host.md drops the swarm/deploy subtrees
(builtins.removeAttrs on the already-picked host tree, not
lib.recursiveUpdate -- that merges rather than deletes, which would
have silently kept them on host.md); swarm.md and deploy.md are new
markdown pages, each its own pickSubtrees root. nix/packages/default.nix
exposes docs-swarm/docs-deploy as flake outputs alongside the existing
docs-host/docs-agent. docs/gotchas.md's Nix options reference section
and docs/swarm/README.md get pointers to the new split.

d3b40da1c8 deploy: give every option an enable, and name the controller one
Two corrections from review, applied forward on this branch rather than
by rewriting it.

`deploy.<service>` was a bare bool, which makes
`deploy.forgejo = { enable; ci; }` unrepresentable -- the nested
CI-runner sub-option this namespace was designed around. Every entry is
now an attrset with an `enable`, so a second per-host deployment
decision becomes an ordinary addition rather than a migration.

`deploy.controller` is now `deploy.swarm-controller`, consistent with
`deploy.swarm-ui`, which was introduced in the same commit.

89 references rewritten across 24 files -- nix, Rust, docs, and the
repo's own CLAUDE.md.

The prefix-anchored sweep missed exactly one, and it was live code:
hive-tls.nix spells it `hyperhiveCfg.deploy.controller` -- the only
`hyperhiveCfg` prefix among 45 references. A suffix grep
(`\.deploy\.<name>`) finds it; a path-anchored one cannot, because the
head of a reference is whatever alias the reading file happens to bind.

37ca7676d6 deploy: move the SSO provider toggle
The largest of these moves: sixteen references spelled through `let`
aliases across eight modules, plus eight more spelled as a path, plus
five documentation pages.

authelia is also the clearest case for why the two namespaces exist.
`swarm.authelia.url` is needed by *every* hive in the swarm — it says
where to send a browser to authenticate — while running the container is
the business of exactly one host. The client half and the server half
were sharing a namespace whose whole contract is "identical everywhere",
and only one of them could honour it.

`swarm.authelia.oidc.clients` stays where it is for the same reason:
several modules register a client there, gated on authelia running here,
and the registry itself is what the service *is* rather than a decision
about this machine.

One sweep note worth recording: a grep for `swarm.authelia.enable` misses
`swarmCfg.authelia.enable`, because the prefix is whatever the reading
file bound. Grepping the suffix `.authelia.enable` finds both, and found
a reference in swarm.nix that the path-shaped pattern did not.
