Rewrite two bare issue references (#4472, #4477) as self-standing
prose per check-issue-refs.sh's requirement — no markdown exemption,
hash-number tags are dead weight to a public forge-mirror reader.
Apply iris's vale fix to docs/agent-lifecycle/approvals.md (passive
voice, two contractions, one auto- hyphenation).
`roles.json` had a seeding path: `topology::reconcile_roles` granted
`can_manage_top_level_agents` to MANAGER_NAME on every meta sync, and that
role is what put every agent's state/config dir, `/applied` and `/meta` into
the root agent's nspawn binds. Collapsing the role into the capability left
the capability store with no equivalent, so the root agent would have lost
its recovery mounts at its next container rebuild — silently, and only then,
since nspawn bakes bind flags at container start.
Seed it in `ensure_root_agent`, before the create/start branch so a hive
whose root container already exists still gets the grant. Seeded once rather
than re-ensured every boot: the role kept an empty-list tombstone so a revoke
stuck, and the capability store deletes an emptied entry instead, so "no
entry for the manager" cannot tell a fresh hive from a deliberate revoke.
File existence can — every grant and revoke writes capabilities.json, even
when the result is `{}` — so the seed fires only while the store has never
been written, and is inert forever after.
The target is `lifecycle::MANAGER_NAME`, the same const the deleted role seed
used and the one definition of "the root agent" in the tree; no name literal
at the seeding site. The written string comes from
`Capability::ManageRootAgent` via `IntoStaticStr` rather than being spelled
out, so it cannot drift into a name `prune_unknown` would drop.
The hive had two spellings of "this agent may act on agents that aren't
its children": the `ManageRootAgent` capability, which nothing checked,
and a `can_manage_top_level_agents` role in a third meta store,
`roles.json`, which owned the real grant — the bind mounts that put
another agent's state (rw) and config (ro) inside the holder's
container. The two drifted independently, and with the parent/child
hierarchy removed the role's set (`parent.is_none()`) silently became
every agent while nothing said so.
Collapse them. The mount grant now hangs off
`Capability::ManageRootAgent`, looked up through the one capability
path that already exists (`capabilities::has_cap` over
`capabilities.json`) rather than a second mechanism. `roles.json` and
everything that read, wrote or reconciled it is gone, along with its
`meta.rs` staging and commit-label wiring; nothing in the tree reads
that file any more.
The enum variant keeps its name deliberately. Renaming it would turn
every `manage_root_agent` already stored in `capabilities.json` into an
unrecognised name that `prune_unknown` drops without asking. Its
meaning, not its spelling, is what changed: "may manage any agent". The
doc comment and the description string now say that.
`top_level_agents()`/`top_level_agents_in()` are replaced by
`all_agents()`/`all_agents_in()`. Under "manage any agent" the mounted
set is every agent by definition, so the code states it instead of
deriving it from a predicate that no longer discriminates — and the
call-site comment explains that, because it otherwise reads as a
widening. The holder is no longer bound as its own virtual child: that
reproduced the own-state and own-config mounts exactly, so dropping it
loses nothing.
Both agent-facing tools go away end to end, with no replacement. This is
an intentional capability removal: agents can no longer enumerate their
own subtree, and can no longer queue a meta-flake input bump.
The system prompt and docs/tools/lifecycle.md land in this same commit
on purpose. A tool named in the prompt but absent from the server makes
agents confidently call something that doesn't exist, and the failure
then surfaces far from its cause.
Removed:
- MCP registrations and bodies (hive-agent-mcp), plus the now-unused
UpdateMetaInputsArgs.
- Wire variants Request::ListDescendants,
Request::RequestUpdateMetaInputs and Response::Containers, plus
ContainerInfo, whose only consumer was that response.
- hive-c0re's handle_list_descendants (its whole module) and
handle_request_update_meta_inputs, the two dispatch arms, and the
require_group(agent, "approvals", ...) gate on the meta-inputs verb.
- The stream_enrich emoji entry and argument formatter.
- docs/tools/lifecycle.md (both tools it documented are gone), its two
referrers, the tool-group tables and the agent-hierarchy prose.
Tool groups are kept, deliberately. ToolGroup::Lifecycle listed exactly
one tool and now lists none — it is vestigial, but the variant stays so
existing meta/capabilities.json grants still parse; retiring it is a
separate decision. ToolGroup::Approvals also listed exactly one tool,
but the group is NOT dead: check_can_cancel_approval still gates
cancel_loose_end's approval-cancel arm on it server-side.
ApprovalKind::UpdateMetaInputs stays too. Nothing in production code
produces it any more, but pre-existing approval rows may still carry it,
and the operator's own path to a meta update is unaffected — the
dashboard's POST /api/meta-update inserts the meta_update job directly,
bypassing approvals entirely.
The two format_ack tests in hive-agent-mcp that named
request_update_meta_inputs were only using it as a label string while
exercising the generic OkWarn/Ok renderer, so they are retargeted to a
surviving tool rather than deleted.
Note hive-c0re's priv_client::list_containers is a different thing (the
host-side privileged container listing behind hive-priv) and is
untouched.
Closes#4591
133 hits across 38 files, all previously classified during #4548's sweep
and deliberately left un-rewritten (predicate-adjective state/necessity
description, design-intent idiom, structural/type-description idiom,
no-single-actor topology claim, parallel-triple exception, vale
substring-match artifact — see hyperhive#4548's per-PR bodies for the
per-hit reasoning).
Wraps each one in a scoped <!-- vale write-good.Passive = NO/YES -->
pair (the supported mechanism — TokenIgnores has a known offset-drift
bug) rather than a blanket per-file or per-rule silence, so a *new*
passive-voice hit anywhere in these files still fails once the rule
gates CI (next commit). Table/list false positives (docs/swarm/credentials.md's
renewal-table cells) wrap the whole block, not each cell.
Part of #4546.
3 genuine passive-voice rewrites (actor named — the operator,
hive-c0re, the harness); 5 false positives left untouched — a
design-intent idiom ('are meant to run'), a predicate-adjective state
description ('is finished'), a predicate-adjective necessity
description ('is required', the original established example for this
category), a project-planning-state description ('is planned'), and a
quoted literal error string ('must be owned by uid 0...').
Part of #4548 — second batch. This PR: docs/integrations/matrix.md
(18 hits), docs/agent-lifecycle/persistence.md (17 hits) = 35 more of
the 353 (99 total across the two PRs so far).
Same method as the first batch (#4551): minimal, meaning-preserving
active-voice rewrites only, no restructuring beyond what each flagged
sentence needed, no vale-off silencing.
Genuine false positives left in place, with per-file reasoning in the
PR body: predicate-adjective state descriptions ("is wedged", "is
stopped", "are unrelated", "is unaffected", "is needed"), one
design-intent idiom ("was meant to prevent" — same shape as earlier
docs-lint work), and one vale parsing artifact: "is read" flagged
inside the hyphenated compound adjective "read-only", not real passive
voice at all.
Container lifecycle from inside an agent goes away: an agent no longer
starts, stops, restarts or rebuilds a container in its subtree, and no
longer reads another container's journal. Those are operator actions —
the dashboard and hivectl keep their own paths to the same job-queue
and hive-priv plumbing, which is why none of that machinery is removed
here, only the five MCP verbs and what they alone reached.
What went with them: the `Request` variants and `Response::Logs` on the
agent socket, the five tool definitions and their arg structs, the four
lifecycle handlers plus `handle_get_logs`, and `require_descendant` —
the topology guard those five were the only remaining callers of.
`ToolGroup::Diagnostics` goes too: `get_logs` was its only tool, so it
would otherwise be a grantable group that grants nothing. `lifecycle`
stays, now carrying `list_containers` alone.
An agent that gets a `needs_update` or `container_crash` helper event
has no remedy of its own left, so the system prompt and the docs now
send it to the operator instead of to a tool that no longer exists.
Refs #4480
`services.hyperhive.agent.matrix.enable` was a second source of truth for
a fact the account set already carried: after ①-③ the hive-internal
`main` account is an ordinary `matrixAccounts` entry, so "does this agent
have matrix" and "does this agent have an account" were the same question
asked twice, with the boolean able to disagree.
The option is gone and a non-empty `matrixAccounts` now gates the daemon
unit, its token path-watcher and the injected `extraMcpServers.matrix`
entry.
That is only a real condition because `matrixAccounts.main` is itself
gated: it is declared when `matrix.url != null`, never unconditionally. A
`main` with no homeserver is an account the daemon can never log in as,
so declaring one always would have made the signal trivially true and
turned matrix on for every agent in every hive. With the URL gate, the
empty set is reachable exactly for an agent the hive gave no homeserver
and whose operator declared no account of its own — the state the old
`enable = false` expressed.
Assertions: "extras require enable" is deleted, having become the
definition of the thing it checked (an external-only account with its own
homeserver is now rendered rather than rejected). `main.tokenFile` stays
pinned, re-guarded on `? main` instead of on the flag, since `main` is
absent whenever the URL is null and an unguarded index would throw there.
Both spellings of the option get `mkRemovedOptionModule`, following
../host-modules/deploy.nix's registrationTokenFile pair rather than a
silent delete: the definition whose meaning changes is `false`, and left
undeclared it would be ignored and hand the agent the tools its operator
turned off. Failing the eval with the replacement spelling is the only
outcome that cannot.
module-eval gains the three arms — URL, nothing, external-only — with the
middle one carrying why it exists: it is the only thing in the suite that
would notice `main` becoming unconditional again.
Refs #4475
swarm-controller's `InitAgentConfigRepo` node already covers config-repo
creation, so this deletes a duplicate rather than a capability; old
`init_config` rows are skipped by `collect_lenient` with no migration, by
operator decision.
Refs #4398
`cfg` is whatever the reading module bound it to. It does not exist in a
NixOS configuration, so a sentence naming an option as `cfg.<name>` is
correct about behaviour and unusable as an instruction — the reader has
to go find the real path.
The four sites in docs/networking/gateway.md this was filed for:
cfg.sshPort -> services.hyperhive.swarm.forge.sshPort
cfg.dashboardPort -> services.hyperhive.c0re.dashboardPort
cfg.frontend (x2) -> services.hyperhive.c0re.frontend
Sweeping docs/ for the pattern rather than the ticket's line numbers
found five more, in four other files:
approvals.md cfg.hyperhiveFlake -> services.hyperhive.c0re.hyperhiveFlake
matrix.md cfg.registrationTokenFile -> services.hyperhive.deploy.matrix.registrationTokenFile
matrix.md cfg.gatewayHost -> services.hyperhive.swarm.matrix.gatewayHost
conventions.md cfg.dashboardPort -> services.hyperhive.c0re.dashboardPort
gotchas.md cfg.dashboardPort -> services.hyperhive.c0re.dashboardPort
matrix.md is the clearest case for doing this at all: its two `cfg.`
references resolve to *different* option trees — `deploy.matrix` and
`swarm.matrix` — so the shorthand is ambiguous even within one file.
Each path is read off the `mkOption` that declares it plus the
`options.services.hyperhive.*` root it sits under, with the indentation
checked so a nested block cannot have been missed. `cfg.frontend` is
declared in hive-c0re, not the gateway: the gateway module binds
`cfg = config.services.hyperhive.gateway`, which has no `frontend`.
Deliberately unchanged: docs/networking/snapshot-store.md:136, where
`cfg.port` sits inside a ```nix block quoting module source. `cfg` is
correct there, and rewriting it would make the snippet wrong.
Closes#4193.
Per #4128 (mara: allow-everywhere false positives go in a central
list, otherwise fix in source). Testing surfaced better fixes than
the plan posted on the issue:
- 5x Microsoft.Contractions 'that is' idiom false positives: adding
the missing comma ("that is, ...") both reads better and satisfies
the rule's own negative-lookahead, so no suppression is needed at
all. Fixed in docs/integrations/forge.md, docs/tools/forge.md,
docs/tools/hivectl.md, docs/web-ui/dashboard.md, and
swarmctl-cli.md's generated source (swarmctl/src/main.rs, doc
comment regenerated via markdown-docs).
- persistence.md's 'is not' matching inside 'is nothing': reworded to
'there'\''s nothing' rather than add any exception -- dodges the trap
and is a genuine contraction besides.
- ca.md's 'it is' matching inside the already-correct 'it isn'\''t':
tried a central .vale.ini TokenIgnores entry first per the
allow-everywhere framing, but testing against the real file (not
just a synthetic snippet) found it silently fails to suppress
whenever markdown emphasis syntax appears earlier in the same
file -- an offset-drift bug in how Vale applies TokenIgnores, not
a config mistake. Reworded to "it'\''s not" instead, same fix
shape as persistence.md.
- config.md's 3 genuine Microsoft.Avoid 'backend' exceptions (already
flagged and accepted on #4139 -- an actually-pluggable LLM API
provider, matching the nix option's own name, not one internal
system to name): scoped inline vale suppression around just that
section, since this one really is context-specific rather than a
rule bug.
Verified: fresh 'vale docs/ --minAlertLevel=error' is 0 errors AND
0 warnings (was 10 errors). nix fmt 0 changed beyond the edits
themselves. pre-push lints (tracker-tag/comment-block/doc-pointer)
clean. cargo clippy -p swarmctl -- -D warnings clean. Diffed the
regenerated swarmctl-cli.md against the old copy to confirm only
the intended line moved.
Per mara's ruling on hyperhive#4041 (Microsoft.Avoid): 'backend' never says
which system it means. Fixed all 21 fixable hits to name the actual daemon
(mostly hive-c0re; one hive-agent instance and one hive-matrix-daemon one,
both confirmed against surrounding context, not guessed). Also tightened
Weston's own 'VNC backend'/'RDP backend' plugin references to their literal
upstream names (vnc-backend/rdp-backend) rather than dropping the accurate
term entirely, and reworded one unrelated Microsoft.Avoid hit ('and so on').
Left alone (flagged on the issue, not guessed): docs/turn-loop/config.md's
3 remaining hits match the actual nix option name (backendEnvironmentFile)
and describe a genuinely pluggable concept (which LLM API provider), not
one specific internal system.
Ninth batch of the ongoing write-good.Passive pass (hyperhive#4042):
read all 75 hits across agent-hierarchy.md/persistence.md/approvals.md
in context and rewrote 46 with a clearly nameable actor -- mostly
hive-c0re, a specific fn/type named right there or a sentence or two
earlier (approvals.md's numbered "Reminder delivery" list all share
hive-c0re as the established actor across three consecutive bullets),
or "the worker"/"the daemon" reused from the section's own established
subject.
Left 29 alone. Recurring buckets: predicate-adjective state pairs
("is wedged"/"is stopped", "is unaffected", "are unrelated", "is
overloaded" -- matches the established "is trusted"/"is privileged"
family), negative-capability/invariant idioms ("no X is needed",
"can't be removed/started", "no such transient was cleared"),
forward-looking design-intent statements about not-yet-built
enforcement (agent-hierarchy.md's whole "Planned topology semantics"
section leans on this: "are meant to run", "once enforcement is
finished", "will be gated"), the "audit trail, not cache" policy
invariant restated twice verbatim ("Approvals are kept forever" /
"indefinitely" -- left both alone consistently), and a config-
conditional state idiom ("when interval_seconds is set"). One more
false-positive tokenization, same bug as knowledge.md's earlier case:
persistence.md's "`config` is read-only" trips vale's "is read" match
inside the compound adjective -- not a real passive at all.
One deliberately-conservative leave: agent-hierarchy.md's "Reminder
cancellation is handled fully in-agent" had an ambiguous actor (the
in-agent socket vs. the hive-c0re source file the doc points readers
to for detail) -- left alone rather than risk a wrong attribution,
unlike the higher-confidence rewrites elsewhere in the same batch.
Verified via vale before/after: 75 -> 29 write-good.Passive hits,
exactly the 29 left alone above; error count and other warning
categories unchanged. Re-read every changed line in full surrounding
context after editing before running the final vale check.
Part of #4041's forgotten remainder (UIVerbs was scoped as pure
execution work, no decision needed -- see comment 71586).
29 genuine input-device-neutral rewrites ("click"/"clicking"/"clicked"
-> "select"/"selecting"/"selected", a few reworded where a direct verb
swap didn't read naturally: "one click from the hub" -> "one step from
the hub", "click straight from X into Y" -> "go straight from X into
Y", "the operator never clicked" -> "the operator never triggered").
Left 5 hits unfixed, each read in context and genuinely not a
device-assumption problem:
- docs/process/gotchas.md:439 -- "click-to-unlock screen" names a
specific OS lock-screen pattern, not an instruction to the reader.
- docs/web-ui/agent.md:377 -- "clicks" describes literal RFB pointer
events forwarded by hive-screen-mcp's sendPointer, genuinely
mouse-specific.
- docs/web-ui/agent.md:78 -- "ctrl/middle-click" names a specific
keyboard-modifier + mouse-button combination with no "select"
equivalent.
- docs/web-ui/dashboard.md:741 -- explicitly contrasts "click (or
Enter/Space)" as two named input methods; replacing "click" with
"select" would conflate the two the sentence is distinguishing.
- docs/web-ui/shape.md:253 -- "swipes in from the right" describes the
panel's own slide animation, not a user touch gesture.
Verified: fresh `vale --filter '.Name == "Microsoft.UIVerbs"' docs`
after the fix shows exactly those 5, `nix fmt` reports 0 changes.
Fixes the "obvious ones first" slice of #4042 (mara: do the obvious
ones first) -- 81 hits across write-good.So, write-good.ThereIs, and
write-good.Weasel, all in docs/. Each is a genuine sentence rewrite
(lead with the real subject instead of "There is/are", drop a
sentence-initial "So ", replace a vague intensifier), not a blind
regex substitution -- read every hit in its real file context before
touching it.
3 of the 81 hits were in CI-generated CLI docs (docs/tools/{hivectl,
swarmctl,forge}-cli.md) -- fixed at the clap #[arg(...)]/doc-comment
source in hivectl/src/cli.rs, swarmctl/src/main.rs, and
hive-forge/src/verbs/repo_add_collaborator.rs, then regenerated via
each crate's `markdown-docs` subcommand so CI's freshness check stays
green.
Verified: fresh vale re-run shows 0 remaining So/ThereIs/Weasel hits
and no new hits introduced (983->982, exactly the one incidental fix
this pass also picked up at docs/scheduler/observability.md:48).
cargo fmt --check and clippy clean on the three touched crates.
Remaining write-good backlog (Passive: 726, TooWordy: 207) is
judgment-heavy and left for a follow-up slice of #4042, not bulk-
rewritten here.
Fixes 22 of 23 Microsoft.Hyphens hits: an adverb ending in -ly doesn't
need a hyphen to the word it modifies (minimally scoped, currently
running, deliberately stopped, ...) -- the -ly ending already
unambiguously signals it's modifying the following word, so the
hyphen is redundant per Microsoft style.
Left one hit alone: docs/web-ui/dashboard.md's 'checked-not-originally-
active' is a single 4-word compound designator (parallel structure
with 'unchecked-was-active' right before it in the same sentence,
describing a diffing algorithm's two possible states), not an
ordinary -ly-adverb modifier -- dropping just the one hyphen vale
flagged would have broken the compound into a dangling
'checked-not-originally active' fragment. Also rewrote
docs/scheduler/coordinator.md's 'still-fully-queued' as a predicate
('DAGs that are still fully queued') rather than leaving a similar
broken partial-hyphen chain, since 'still' and 'fully' are both plain
adverbs with no reason to hyphenate at all once dehyphenated
consistently.
Verified via vale: only the one deliberately-left hit remains.
Fixed 72 hyphenated 'auto-X' compounds across the docs by deleting
the hyphen to match Microsoft style guide (autogenerated, autoregistration,
autodiscovery, etc). Preserved original capitalization throughout.
Covered 26 documentation files in docs/, including README.md, agent-lifecycle,
integrations, scheduler, networking, process, tools, trust-boundary,
turn-loop, and web-ui sections.
Substitutes 'for example' for 'e.g.' and 'that is' for 'i.e.' per
Microsoft style, with no comma after the replacement -- this repo
never puts a comma after e.g./i.e. either, so the substituted phrase
matches that house style instead of vale's literal 'for example,'
suggestion.
Covers all 77 real hits (72 from the initial vale pass + 5 more of the
same pattern found on a follow-up vale run). None of the flagged
instances were sentence-initial, so there's no capitalization concern
here.
Verified via a fresh vale run: 0 remaining Microsoft.Foreign hits.
Full accounting in /agents/iris/state/haiku-batches/foreign-report.md.
Review pass on top of the previous commit (85a94671) turned up three
real issues its own vale-only verification didn't catch:
- 'has not' -> 'hasn't' fired inside 'has nothing', corrupting
docs/swarm/README.md into 'hasn'thing to say upward'. Restored
'has nothing'.
- ~44 hits where the original text was genuinely sentence-initial
('It is', 'That is', 'They are', 'What is', 'Do not', ...) got
contracted in lowercase, silently de-capitalizing the start of a
sentence. Checked each one's real surrounding text and capitalized
the ones that needed it.
- Confirmed (by reading the actual text, not just trusting vale) that
the 3 remaining 'is not'/'has not'/'it is' hits after those fixes are
vale's own false positives: it matches these as a bare substring with
no trailing word boundary, so it also fires on 'is nothing', 'has
nothing', and the already-correct 'it isn't'. Left those alone --
there's no real issue in the text.
Re-verified with a fresh vale run: the remaining 17 hits are exactly
the union of the 14 legitimate ALL-CAPS/bold-emphasis skips from the
first commit and these 3 false positives. Full accounting in
/agents/iris/state/haiku-batches/contractions-report.md.
Apply contraction fixes across ~40 doc files (setup, integrations, lifecycle,
networking, scheduler, swarm, tools, trust-boundary, UI, etc.). Skipped 14 hits:
- 10 where words appear in ALL CAPS for deliberate emphasis (is NOT, do NOT, etc.)
- 4 where text could not be safely located due to markdown formatting or column position
Applied via systematic scan with checks for fenced code blocks, inline code spans,
and intentional caps. Preserves sentence-initial capitalization throughout.
docs/web-ui.md duplicated the web-ui/ directory name at the top level --
the only such collision in docs/ (every other subsystem has just a
directory, no sibling <dir>.md file). That's exactly why it rendered
outside the directory structure in the docs site nav (mara's report,
hyperhive#4054): the site build walks docs/ generically with no
special-casing, so a loose top-level file next to a same-named
directory shows up as its own flat top-level entry instead of nesting
under that directory's section.
web-ui.md's own first paragraph already said as much -- 'This doc has
been split for readability... start at web-ui/README.md instead.' It
was a leftover pointer from before the split, not a page carrying
unique content on its own merit.
Folded its two sections web-ui/README.md didn't already have (the
swarm-ui design-guide link, and the task-oriented 'reading paths'
quick-lookup list) into web-ui/README.md's existing 'More depth'
section, then deleted the stray file and repointed every real
reference at it: 3 in-tree doc cross-links, 3 doc prose mentions
(retargeted to the more specific dashboard.md/shape.md sub-page each
one was actually about), and ~28 frontend source comments
(dashboard/agent/shared packages) that cited it as
'docs/web-ui.md::<heading>' for implementation context -- retargeted
each to whichever of dashboard.md/shape.md/agent.md actually carries
that heading now, verified against each file's real heading list
rather than guessed.
Verified via scripts/check-doc-refs.sh (the same lint CI runs): 0 dead
pointers, both before write (confirming the tree was clean beforehand)
and after (confirming nothing broke).
mara on #3923: "past tense is itself a smell for docs, we dont need any
'used to be somewhere else'" and "any gate we add should not have false
positives". Those are one instruction: the entire false-positive set of a
repo-path checker was prose naming files that are deliberately gone, so
removing the prose is what lets the gate be strict instead of carrying a
skip-list nobody maintains.
Three sites, and only two of them are past tense:
`agent-hierarchy.md` named two removed modules to explain that a code path
is gone. A reader cannot act on where it used to live; they can act on
where cancellation happens now, which is the half the sentence buried.
`term_msg.rs` carried a "Design history" paragraph whose live content was
three rules -- classification is server-side, `level` carries styling, four
named fields are deliberately absent -- wrapped in narration about a
redesign and a pointer to a deleted frontend file. Restated as the rules.
`gotchas.md` is NOT past tense: it correctly names a file in the website
repo. Qualifying it as `hyperhive/website:nix/options.nix` did not work --
the extractor still matches `nix/options.nix` as a substring, so the fix
has to be prose that contains no repo-relative path at all. Naming the
file alone does that and reads better.
Verified against this tree rather than the default checkout: the audit
script takes a directory argument and defaults elsewhere, so its first
(unchanged) DEAD:3 was a true statement about a different branch. On this
one: DEAD 3 -> 0, 141 distinct paths enumerated, and an injected dead path
is still caught.
Refs #3923
`hive-matrix-daemon.path` globbed `/agents/*/state/matrix-token*`. Every
agent's state dir is visible from inside every container, so the
condition is satisfied by a sibling's token.
That is reachable, not cosmetic. The daemon deliberately exits 0 when it
has no token of its own — `Restart = "on-failure"` therefore does not
restart it, and the unit sits inactive, which is the state the path unit
exists for. In that state a sibling's token keeps the glob satisfied:
the path fires, the daemon exits 0, the unit deactivates, the path
re-arms, the condition is still true. systemd.path(5) activates a
`PathExists`-family condition that already holds immediately on arming,
so it repeats until the start limit stops it.
Scoped to this agent, the condition is false exactly when the daemon
would have nothing to do.
The glob is quoted in four other places, all of which would otherwise
name a pattern that no longer exists — a doc, a Rust doc-comment in
hive-c0re, a nix comment, and an assertion message an operator reads.
Each is reworded to the basename (`matrix-token*` in this agent's state
dir), which is what the assertion actually enforces via `baseNameOf`, so
they stay true wherever the directory moves.
Refs #4030.
Fixes the 'genuine' bucket from #4040's triage: whitelist/allowlist
(6 hits across 5 files, including a heading rename in turn-loop/mcp.md
-- checked no anchor links reference it first) and the
simply/obvious/easy condescending-word cluster (10 of 13 hits, real
sentence-level rewrites rather than mechanical deletion so nothing
reads awkwardly).
Left 3 alex.Condescending hits untouched on purpose:
integrations/matrix.md:271 and process/conventions.md:442 both say
"non-obvious", swarm/ca.md:162 says "not obvious" -- alex matched
the substring "obvious" inside a negated phrase, the literal opposite
of condescending. Flagging these on the issue rather than silently
leaving them out.
An option name that is absent reads exactly like one that is present —
the reader has no way to tell, and the failure surfaces as a nixos eval
error at deploy time. Two namespace reorgs the prose never followed:
`forge.*` moved under `swarm.`, and several flat paths under `c0re.`.

Both `gateway.md` blocks are fenced nix an operator is meant to paste.
Two sites needed more than a rename:
dashboard.md:781 cited `gateway.enable` as a live opt-in. It was
removed; `gateway.md:269` already says the gateway is unconditional,
and `hive-c0re/environment.nix:208` sets HIVE_GATEWAY_ENABLED = "1"
with no condition. Rewritten to say so, keeping the flag-absent
fallback the dashboard still implements.
turn-loop/config.md:4 attributed the page's knobs to
`services.hyperhive.agents.<name>`. No such option exists — every
knob the page documents is agent-side `hyperhive.*`, set in the
agent's own agent.nix.
Measured against the module system rather than a grep: `nix build
.#docs` renders nixosOptionsDoc over the evaluated trees (279 option
paths). That arm alone is wrong — it omits `internal = true` options
and called `gateway.localNames` and `swarm.peerHives` dead, so a second
arm requires the literal path to appear in nix/ and rescues exactly
those. Four remaining unresolved citations are correct prose saying
`gateway.enable` / `network.{enable,isolateContainers,upstreamDns}`
were removed, and are left alone.
Closes#3948
Pure `nix fmt` output from the commit before this one — no hand edits.
203 files: 52 md, 42 tsx, 32 js, 32 css, 21 ts, 13 html, 8 json, 3 mjs.
Reproduce with `nix develop -c nix fmt` on the parent commit; the result
should be byte-identical to this tree.
None of the 13 `.prettierignore` entries appears here — verified by
intersecting the changed-file list against the ignore file, with a
control proving the intersection finds a match when one exists.
`docs/` was reorganised into topic subdirectories and the references to it
were not moved with it. Thirteen distinct paths and three relative links no
longer resolved, spread across nix, css, html, js, markdown and
.prettierignore — a stale pointer is not a markdown problem, it is wherever
someone wrote a path down.
Each mapping resolved to exactly one target. `docs/matrix.md` was the sole
ambiguous basename: .prettierignore lists `docs/tools/matrix.md` separately
and that entry still resolves, so the stale one is the integrations doc.
The three relative links were each one `../` too deep — from `<crate>/src/`
two levels reach the repo root. `hive-agent/src/login.rs` already had the
correct form, in the same crate, at the same depth.
.prettierignore is repointed rather than dropped, though nothing in the tree
runs prettier: no treefmt entry, no CI job, no package script. Whether that
config should exist at all is a separate question from whether it names
files that do.
Per mara's go-ahead on hyperhive#3902 ("getting started is good, but
terminal rendering does not go in there i think"):
Moved 21 top-level docs/*.md files into 7 new topic subdirectories
(existing web-ui/, turn-loop/, swarm/, tools/, crates/ untouched):
getting-started/ setup.md
agent-lifecycle/ agent-hierarchy.md, approvals.md, persistence.md
trust-boundary/ boundary.md, security.md
integrations/ forge.md, matrix.md, github.md, knowledge.md
networking/ gateway.md, network.md, snapshot-store.md
scheduler/ jobq.md, coordinator.md, ci.md, observability.md
process/ conventions.md, gotchas.md, pr-review-gate.md
web-ui/ terminal-rendering.md (moved into the EXISTING dir,
per mara's correction to the original getting-started
guess -- it's UI implementation detail, not onboarding)
The physical layout now matches docs/README.md's own topical headers,
which already amounted to this taxonomy -- see the scoping comment on
the issue for the two findings that motivated this (a genuine
duplication between CLAUDE.md's old "Reading paths" list and
docs/README.md's grouped one, since drifted out of sync with each
other; and the flat layout not matching the grouping we already had).
Fixed every cross-reference this moved across the whole repo (~120
files: docs/ internal links at every depth, Rust doc comments, nix
module option docs, crate READMEs) -- verified two ways: a grep sweep
confirming zero remaining references to any old path, and a script
that resolves every markdown link in docs/**/*.md + CLAUDE.md +
README.md against the filesystem and reports anything that doesn't
exist (zero broken links).
Collapsed CLAUDE.md's "Reading paths" section (the duplicate) down to
a pointer at docs/README.md, now the single index. Rewrote
docs/README.md itself to use the new subdirectory paths and added the
one doc it was missing that CLAUDE.md's old copy had (pr-review-gate.md).
Classified all 22 docs/*.md files first via a haiku subagent (mara's
suggestion) on two axes -- proposed grouping and operator-vs-
implementation focus -- before finalizing the taxonomy; spot-checked
the report and found internal inconsistencies (its classification
table disagreed with its own summary section for a few files), so this
taxonomy is my original proposal + the one correction mara gave
directly, not a blind application of the subagent's table. The
operator-focus data it gathered is still useful for a follow-up
content pass (docs skewing 'mixed' rather than pure operator-facing),
not addressed in this PR -- structure only.
nix fmt clean, both pre-push lints clean.
