swarm-metrics reads the swarm's VictoriaMetrics from inside an agent
container: query, query-range, series, labels and label-values, each one
GET against the store's Prometheus read API through the gateway, printing
the store's JSON. It authenticates the way swarm-logs does, with the
agent's own queue secret read from bao under the agent's leaf, sent as
a swarm-agent bearer.
On the metrics store's host the read API's auth map gains an agent arm
ahead of the Grafana one. It routes to swarm-metrics-agent-auth, a
swarm-logs-auth instance logged in under the existing swarm-metrics-auth
leaf, whose bao grant now includes swarm/agents/+/queue read. The check is
rate-limited per address like the log store's
(deploy.victoriametrics.agentAuth{Rate,Burst,VerdictTtl}).
nix/agent-modules/metrics.nix installs the wrapped binary when the hive
forwards HIVE_AGENT_METRICS_URL (from swarm.victoriametrics.domain) and a
store address, the same gate as swarm-logs. Adds the base:swarm-metrics
skill and the CLI reference with its freshness check.
Fixes#5395
The metrics store's container now runs the journal forwarder the other
service containers run, pushing to a receiver of its own on the swarm
collector (serviceProducers swarm-victoriametrics) as a new machine OIDC
client (swarm.victoriametrics.otel.clientId), registered by a glue file
wherever authelia runs and published to the store by the secret publisher.
The container keeps its loopback-only netns. The collector cannot dial a
unix socket, so swarm-victoriametrics-egress-relay, a socket-activated
systemd-socket-proxyd inside the container, takes its connections on
127.0.0.1:4380 and passes them to /run/swarm-victoriametrics-egress/egress.sock.
The host's nginx listens there and sends /swarm-victoriametrics/ to the swarm
collector and /api/oidc/token to authelia, both by name and verified, and
refuses every other path. nginx gets ReadWritePaths on that directory and
removes a stale socket before it starts.
The container cannot reach the store, so the client secret is fetched on the
host by swarm-victoriametrics-forwarder-oidc under swarm-metrics-auth's leaf,
the shape swarm-bao-forwarder-oidc has, and bound into the container
read-only. The forwarder module gains hostSecretFile for that: set, it renders
no fetch unit. swarm-metrics-auth's policy gains one read stanza on the
forwarder's client path.
The container drops --link-journal=host, and the host collector stops reading
it.
Also lists the forge publisher's and matrix-ctl's leaves in the forwarder
secrets row of docs/swarm/secrets.md, which the hive-forge/hive-matrix change
missed.
Ten service modules (forge, matrix chat, authelia, grafana, otel, nats,
swarm-ui, victorialogs, victoriametrics, bao UI) wrote
services.nginx.virtualHosts themselves, each applying the gateway's
listen set, per-name TLS attrs and security headers by hand. They now
declare services.hyperhive.gateway.vhosts.<name> with only their own
locations and options; ./declared-vhosts.nix renders it into the nginx
vhost with listen, TLS and headers added.
An eval assertion refuses a declared vhost that sets listen, addSSL,
onlySSL, enableACME, useACMEHost, sslCertificate or sslCertificateKey,
and one declared while the gateway is off. nats' own leaf is the new
`certificate` field. The rendered nginx vhosts are unchanged.
The metrics vhost forwarded the store's read API (query, series, labels,
export, vmui, ...) with no credential, so anything that could reach
metrics.<swarm> could read every hive's and agent's metrics. mara ruled on
checked by an auth_request responder, and operators use their authelia
session.
- swarm-metrics-auth (new crate): auth_request responder on the metrics
store's host. Compares the presented bearer, in constant time, with the
one stored at swarm/services/<grafana client id>/metrics/bearer, read
under its own bao leaf and cached for 60s. Static user, the post-#5264
swarm-logs-auth unit shape.
- swarm-bao-grafana-metrics-bearer: on Grafana's host, creates that bearer
in bao if absent (create without update, Grafana's existing leaf) and
writes "Bearer <value>" into the container; the datasource sends it as
its Authorization header via $__file{}.
- The vhost: read locations take auth_request through a map (a bearer goes
to swarm-metrics-auth, anything else to authelia, no login redirect);
vmui takes an authelia session with the login redirect; forceSSL like
the logs vhost. The authelia subrequest location is renamed from
/__metrics_push_authz to /__metrics_authelia since it now serves reads.
- Authelia: the collector keeps every path; everyone else is refused the
collector's push and /metrics paths; group admins is admitted to the
rest; then deny.
- bao: a swarm-metrics-auth cert role and policy (read on the one leaf),
its leaf minted by glue-bao-tls, the CN reserved as a hive name, and
Grafana's grant gains create on the bearer leaf.
Fixes#3596
The socket scheme needs VictoriaMetrics 1.153.0 or later: older builds
create the socket 0600 whatever the umask, so nginx could not connect
and every consumer would get 502 with the module evaluating clean.
deploy.victoriametrics.package is an operator option, so an assertion
now refuses an older one, naming the option and the reason.
Turning DynamicUser off moves the state directory from
/var/lib/private/victoriametrics (behind a /var/lib/victoriametrics
symlink) to a plain /var/lib/victoriametrics. A oneshot ordered before
the store moves the old directory there and chowns it to the static
user when the plain path is the old symlink, empty, or missing, and does
nothing once the private directory is gone. Without it the persistent
container's history depends on systemd's own DynamicUser-off migration.
Refs #4815
The metrics store's container gets privateNetwork = true with no
interface but loopback. VictoriaMetrics listens on
unix:/run/swarm-victoriametrics/victoriametrics.sock, a host directory
(root:nginx 0770) bind-mounted into the container, and every vhost
location that forwarded to 127.0.0.1:8428 now forwards to that socket.
The store runs as a static user whose primary group is nginx's gid,
with UMask 0007, so the socket it creates is 0770 group nginx. This
relies on VictoriaMetrics >= 1.153.0 honouring the umask (the locked
nixpkgs ships 1.153.0). nixpkgs' readiness loop curls a TCP URL, so
postStart is replaced with the same loop over --unix-socket.
swarm.victoriametrics.port is removed (nothing binds it any more), with
a mkRemovedOptionModule entry, and dropped from swarm-otel's host
port-collision assertion. The container's resolver unit is dropped:
there is no interface to reach the bridge resolver through, and the
store resolves no names.
The collector scrape, the collector push and Grafana's datasource
already reach the store by its published domain, so they are unchanged.
Refs #4815
Refs #3560
No access rule covered the push route on `metrics.<swarm>`, so a request
there fell to `default_policy = one_factor`: any logged-in session cookie
for the swarm could write samples into VictoriaMetrics.
The name now gets two rules with no `resources`: the collector's client
at `one_factor`, then `deny`. Only the push route and `/metrics` on that
vhost send an authelia subrequest (the read API, Grafana's datasource
included, is served with no check), and the collector is the one caller
of both, so a domain-wide pair covers them with no path or query regex
to slip past. It replaces the per-path `/metrics` pair the published
target would otherwise derive for that name. Both rules sit ahead of the
apex and store-UI rules, and authelia matches `domain` exactly, so they
shadow no other name.
Authelia 4.39.20, read from source: a rule with no `domain` wildcard
matches with `strings.EqualFold` (access_control_domain.go), an empty
`resources` or `subject` list matches everything (access_control_rule.go),
and the first matching rule wins (authorizer.go).
Fixes#5218
The store's own /metrics was scraped over loopback, declared under
deploy.victoriametrics.enable, so a collector on another host never had
a job for it. Declare it as a published target on every host instead,
keyed on swarm.victoriametrics.domain, and serve it on the metrics vhost
behind the existing authz subrequest. Authelia's per-target rules (one
collector rule, then deny) now cover it too.
The loopback entry goes, so a single-host swarm scrapes the store once.
The metrics vhost's `/` proxied every path to VictoriaMetrics with no
auth_request, so anything that could reach metrics.<swarm> could write
(`/api/v1/import`, `/api/v1/write`, ...) and delete
(`/api/v1/admin/tsdb/delete_series`) series. Only the OTLP push route
was gated.
`/` now answers 403. The read routes Grafana's Prometheus datasource
and vmui use are forwarded by exact or `^~` prefix location, each with
the matched path as its proxy_pass URI. The bare domain, which the
swarm UI's Metrics quick link opens, redirects to vmui instead of the
store's index page. The OTLP push location is unchanged.
Closes#5186
The swarm-controller builds the Forge quick link from
services.hyperhive.swarm.forge.domain, replacing hive-forge/default.nix's
per-host entry, so all seven swarm-service links come from swarm-level
options.
Also drops the remaining references to the removed matrix GUI switch:
the HiveUrls / Urls / hive_urls docs, the hivectl.md `open` note and
the gateway.md vhost-map rows, which name `gatewayHost` instead. The
grafana, victoriametrics and victorialogs modules' comments no longer
mention a quick-link they do not define.
Refs #4885
The swarm-controller module builds the Authelia, Grafana, Metrics and
Logs quick links from services.hyperhive.swarm.<service>.domain, on the
controller's host, instead of each service module adding its entry only
on the host that runs it. A controller whose swarm runs those services
on other hosts lists them in its /api/links popover.
Forge, matrix and bao links are not moved yet: forge waits on #4891,
matrix and bao on whether their GUI gate becomes swarm-level.
Refs #4885
`swarm.victoriametrics` (what the metrics store is to every hive: container
name, domain, port) moves to nix/host-modules/swarm-victoriametrics-service.nix,
together with the only two helpers it reads, `swarmDomain` and `domainBase`.
Everything else -- the `deploy.victoriametrics` options, the whole `config`
block including `containers.swarm-victoriametrics`, the file header and the
helpers only they read -- stays in nix/host-modules/swarm-victoriametrics.nix,
which default.nix now imports alongside the new file.
`hyperhiveCfg` (an alias for `config.services.hyperhive`, not an option) is
read by both halves, so it is duplicated into the service file rather than
shared.
A pure move: option paths, option definitions and config are unchanged
apart from the comment above the `deploy.victoriametrics` options, which now
names the file `swarm.victoriametrics` lives in. Fixtures enabling the store
evaluate to the same host and container toplevel derivations before and
after.
Refs #3742
The swarm collector's journald receiver read only the units listed in
`services.hyperhive.swarm.otel.journaldUnits`. A unit nobody listed
never reached the store, and a misspelt entry shipped nothing without
an error. The list existed to keep an operator's desktop session out of
a store every swarm operator can read, but the receiver can only match
positively, so the only way to express "not user sessions" was to name
every service instead.
The receiver now reads the whole host journal, and a new
`filter/exclude-user-sessions` processor in the `logs/<swarm>` pipeline
drops records whose `_SYSTEMD_SLICE` is `user-<uid>.slice` (session
scopes and `user@<uid>.service`). The per-hive `logs/<hive>` pipelines
carry agent-container journals only and get no filter.
`journaldUnits` is removed with `mkRemovedOptionModule`, together with
its non-empty assertion and the entry each host module added. The four
module-eval membership checks go with it, replaced by one structural
case in swarm-otel-core.
Closes#3646
The ten hand-rolled `containers.<name>` blocks each repeat the same
in-container lines: `system.stateVersion`, a firewall turned off because
the container shares the host netns, and resolvconf forced off because
something in the container writes /etc/resolv.conf itself.
`nix/host-modules/swarm-container.nix` now owns those lines. It is
imported inside the container's own config and exposes
`services.hyperhive.swarmContainer.{privateNetwork,writesOwnResolvConf}`
for the host module to set. `stateVersion` is a `mkDefault`, so the two
containers on another value can keep theirs. `--link-journal=host` stays
per module, and so do the host-side attrs (autoStart, ephemeral,
privateNetwork, bindMounts).
swarm-victoriametrics is converted as the first user. Its container
toplevel drvPath is unchanged. A module-eval case now forces that
container's config, which nothing in the suite read before.
Refs #3773
`services.hyperhive.enable` and `services.hyperhive.c0re.enable` are gone.
One switch, `services.hyperhive.deploy.hive-controller.enable` (default
false, as the old toggle was), now gates hive-c0re and hive-priv. Both old
paths are `mkRenamedOptionModule` shims in deploy.nix, so a host config
that still sets either evaluates as before and gets a rename warning.
Every other read of the old toggle is resolved, including the 29 made
through the `hyperhiveCfg`/`hiveCfg` aliases:
- Dropped: each swarm service and its glue keeps only its own deploy
toggle (authelia, bao and its PKI glue, grafana, victorialogs,
victoriametrics, the secret publisher, swarm-ca, the OIDC client rows,
the controller/nats/matrix-ctl/publisher/services-issuer identities),
the forge, and the `domain` deprecation warning.
- To deploy.hive-controller.enable: the queue-agent credential reader and
its assertion, which feed hive-c0re and write under its state dir, plus
their policy-order entry; the network identity assertions; hive-tls's
two writes into hive-c0re's environment.
- hive-tls runs where the gateway runs self-signed
(`gateway.enable && useSelfSigned`), not on every host.
- The matrix appservice-token reader and its assertion stay on
`deploy.matrix.enable` plus their client-identity checks. They read
deploy.matrix's token file and registration script; their deploy.bao
inputs are the client-half options a hive sets to read a store it does
not run, so gating on deploy.bao.enable would drop the tested
remote-reader case.
- The `hiveName` assertion moves from hive-network.nix to hyperhive.nix
and fires wherever the hive, the store or the homeserver runs: each
turns the name into an identifier with no fallback.
On a host with `deploy.allSwarmServices` and no hive, the documented
services-host recipe, authelia, bao, grafana, victorialogs,
victoriametrics, the OIDC client rows and the hive CA now render; before,
the old toggle being off left them out.
Refs #4500
`services.hyperhive.gateway.enable`, `gateway.dns.enable` and
`network.enable` replace the `hyperhive.enable` gate on all three. Each
defaults to false; the modules that need one assert it with `mkDefault
true` from inside the guard their own deployment already carries, and
`swarm-required-services.nix` — the module that owns what the
swarm-services toggle implies — asserts all three explicitly.
hive-c0re asserts all three unconditionally, so an ordinary hive keeps
getting them with no opt-in: it is the host's only knowledge that agent
containers exist.
The resolver moves to its own `hive-gateway/dns.nix` so it can be gated
without reindenting the nginx half of the module.
Reinstates `network.enable`, dropping its `mkRemovedOptionModule` shim.
A config still carrying `network.enable = false` from before the removal
now switches the bridge off instead of failing eval.
Also deletes a duplicate `centralToggleOff` fixture in nix/module-eval.nix.
Two sibling slices added it independently (c5f60fd5, ce3b3d94); the merge
was textually clean and left `main` failing to evaluate at all, so this
file could not be gated without removing one.
autheliaCfg/forgeCfg/vmCfg/vlCfg were local re-exports of
hyperhiveCfg.swarm.<subpath> — a shape that hides the full option
path from grep, the same hazard #4356 fixed for the tls alias.
Removed the six let-bindings and spelled the full
hyperhiveCfg.swarm.<subpath>.<field> path at every use site instead.
None of the read fields (url, machine, hiveClientPrefix,
agentClientSuffix, domain, port) sit on the old side of a
mkRenamedOptionModule in deploy.nix, so inlining the alias's own
current path is correct as-is.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Same rule as matrix and grafana: which build a service runs is a decision
of the host that runs it. Both stores already had a `deploy.<store>`
option for retention, so the package joins something rather than opening
a namespace.
The prose in both modules claimed the package as part of "what the store
IS from any hive's point of view" — a client hive needs the domain and
the port to reach a store, never the build it runs. deploy.nix's own
comment made the same claim about the pair and is corrected with them.
Separately, and the reason this commit adds a fixture rather than a line:
NEITHER STORE HAD AN OLD-PATH FIXTURE AT ALL. `swarm.victorialogs.` and
`swarm.victoriametrics.` had zero hits in module-eval.nix, so the
`enable` shims from the first slice and both `retentionPeriod` shims have
been uncovered since they landed — the suite would have gone green with
any of them deleted. That is precisely what the wireguard fixture's own
comment warns about: a missing shim reads as a clean tree and breaks
every existing operator config.
`storesOldPath` therefore sets all six old paths, not just the two this
commit moves. The case reads the package the CONTAINER renders rather
than the option, so a shim that resolves but stops reaching the module
fails too.
Refs #3772.
The swarm collector reads /var/log/journal and has never seen a single
container unit. mara's count-by-unit against VictoriaLogs returns four
units, all host-tier; openbao -- which runs inside the swarm-bao
container -- is absent.
Cause: nixos-containers.nix hardcodes `--link-journal=try-guest` for
every non-ephemeral container. With `guest`, the host's
/var/log/journal/<machine-id> is a SYMLINK into the container's transient
root; a reader in the host namespace cannot follow it, and it dangles as
soon as the container stops. `ls -la /var/log/journal/` on the host shows
one real directory and a pile of `-> /tmp/nspawn-root-*` links dating
back to May.
swarm-otel.nix asserted the opposite, and that assertion is why the
receiver's path was considered sufficient: it said the files "live here"
and are "bind-mounted into the guest rather than the other way round".
That describes `--link-journal=host`. The same sentence names the flag we
actually use. The flag was right and the behaviour it described was not,
so grepping for the flag confirmed the comment and taught nothing.
`containers.<name>.extraFlags` feeds EXTRA_NSPAWN_FLAGS, which the
invocation expands after the hardcoded flag, so `--link-journal=host`
wins. The comment now describes what the code does instead of the other
way round.
Two payoffs, and the smaller one is the one the issue is about:
container logs become collectable, and -- independently -- they become
durable at all, rather than dying with the container.
Ten identical edits because ten host-modules hand-roll their own
container block; that duplication is #3773, not something to invent an
abstraction for here.
NOT VERIFIED: that systemd-nspawn honours the last `--link-journal` of
two. Everything else here is read out of nixpkgs; that step is a claim
about its argument parsing which cannot be exercised without starting a
container. It is settled by deploying one and re-running the `ls`: the
machine-id entry becomes a real directory instead of a symlink.
Refs #3849
The collector's store exporters were gated on deploy.victoriametrics.enable /
deploy.victorialogs.enable — options that say "this host RUNS the store", not
"the swarm has one". A collector that did not share a host with the stores
rendered no exporter at all and dropped everything it received, from every
hive, silently: an absent exporter is not an error.
mara ruled the premise rather than the mechanism ("the swarm always has a
store"), so there is no gate and no new option for that. Both exporters are
unconditional and address the stores by domain, per the cross-host rule from
the OIDC client and secret-delivery unit #3517 already built. The logs exporter
had the identical bug and is fixed here too.
Both stores gained a machine ingest route, required in the same change: the
exporter now targets https://logs.<domain>/insert/..., and that vhost is
browser-shaped, so shipping the collector half alone would have regressed logs
ingestion that works today. Neither ingest location carries
`error_page 401 =302` — a pusher handed a redirect follows it and POSTs at a
login page, which answers 200.
Whether the collector authenticates follows the CREDENTIAL, never another
service's placement: `clientSecretFile` is a nullable option, and the delivery
unit — the one thing here that may know where authelia runs, since it copies
out of its container — sets it by mkDefault. An earlier revision gated this on
deploy.authelia.enable directly, which put a different service's co-location in
the collector's own config.
Also removed rather than relaxed: the assertion that this collector has
"somewhere to send". It read the store's per-host enable, so it rejected at
eval exactly the deployment reaching the stores by domain exists for.
Deliberately not replaced with an authentication assertion — a collector on a
host of its own is a supported shape, and refusing to build it would make this
fix illegal where the bug bites hardest.
Knock-on worth review: collectLogs is now always satisfied, so journald
collection is unconditional.
Config shape validated against otelcol-contrib 0.151.0 `validate`, with a
bogus-key control confirming the validator checks the extension schema.
module-eval: 31 properties.
Both retentionPeriods move to deploy.<store>.retentionPeriod. Measured
before moving: each is read exactly once, in the container definition of
the module that deploys the store, and no client hive consults either --
so they are options on the auto-deployed service rather than something
every host has to agree on.
What stays in swarm.* is what a client needs to reach the store: the
package, the name it answers on, the port. Both modules said "what stays
here is its package, domain, retention and wiring" in their options-block
comments; retention no longer does, so those say so.
Renames go in deploy.nix with the rest, so the whole move keeps one home
and one file to delete when the deprecation window closes.
Two corrections from review, applied forward on this branch rather than
by rewriting it.
`deploy.<service>` was a bare bool, which makes
`deploy.forgejo = { enable; ci; }` unrepresentable -- the nested
CI-runner sub-option this namespace was designed around. Every entry is
now an attrset with an `enable`, so a second per-host deployment
decision becomes an ordinary addition rather than a migration.
`deploy.controller` is now `deploy.swarm-controller`, consistent with
`deploy.swarm-ui`, which was introduced in the same commit.
89 references rewritten across 24 files -- nix, Rust, docs, and the
repo's own CLAUDE.md.
The prefix-anchored sweep missed exactly one, and it was live code:
hive-tls.nix spells it `hyperhiveCfg.deploy.controller` -- the only
`hyperhiveCfg` prefix among 45 references. A suffix grep
(`\.deploy\.<name>`) finds it; a path-anchored one cannot, because the
head of a reference is whatever alias the reading file happens to bind.
Same move as grafana, and the three belong together: they derive from one
switch and a store with no UI is as useless as a UI with no store.
`victorialogs` is the case that shows why the option-path sweep is not
enough on its own. It has **zero** references spelled
`swarm.victorialogs.enable` anywhere in the tree, and four spelled
through `let` aliases (`vlCfg.enable` in the collector, `cfg.enable` in
its own module). A sweep for the path would have reported nothing to do
and left every reader broken.
Prose moved with the code rather than being left behind: the comments in
swarm-required-services.nix that explained why the pair derives together
now sit above the assignments that do it, instead of above the gap where
they used to be.
The journald receiver was configured with a directory and no filter, so
the swarm's log store received every unit on the host that runs the
collector. On a hive whose services live on a workstation that includes
the operator's desktop session, in a store every swarm operator can read.
The receiver has no system-only switch and its `matches` field is an
allowlist too, so what the swarm collects has to be stated rather than
excluded. Each service module names its own units: a service that is not
running contributes nothing, and one added later arrives declared.
An empty list is fail-open — the receiver renders no filter at all and
reads everything — so it is asserted against.
The scraper shipped with no targets, so nothing exercised it. This is its
first user, and the one with the least new surface: victoriametrics
publishes prometheus metrics on the listener it already serves queries on,
so there is no exporter, no extra port and no new reach — the collector's
otlphttp exporter already writes to that same loopback address.
Declared from this module rather than the collector's, per the option's own
rule: an entry exists only where the service that named it runs.
A swarm service container shares the host netns and force-disables
resolvconf, so it inherits the /etc/resolv.conf nixos-containers copies in
at start (cp --remove-destination, host-side preStart, once per start) and
nothing ever refreshes it. That makes the container's resolver a snapshot of
the host's file at its boot instant.
When that snapshot is wrong the container can never recover, and the symptom
appears arbitrarily far from the cause: swarm-nats-auth cannot resolve
authelia's name, so it denies every auth-callout request and the queue
refuses every client with an authorization violation.
Give each of the four swarm containers a oneshot that writes the resolver
file itself, from the bridge IP, ordered before that container's first DNS
consumer. The shape is the one every agent container already uses.
networking.nameservers cannot do this: resolvconf is its only consumer and
these containers disable it, so setting it renders no file while still
evaluating cleanly. A static environment.etc entry cannot either -- it would
have to survive etc activation landing on the regular file the host already
copied there, which no eval can show.
A local time-series database rather than only an external sink, so the
swarm dashboard stays readable when the outside world is not: a view of
the system must not depend on the system it views being healthy.
listenAddress is pinned to loopback. Upstream defaults it to every
interface, and the OTLP ingest path this exists to receive on is
unauthenticated — the gateway is the only intended client and it is on
this host, so a wider bind would publish a write endpoint to whatever
the host is reachable on.
retentionPeriod defaults high rather than being required, because the
two failure directions are not symmetric: too long fills a disk, which
is visible and recoverable by lowering it, while too short destroys
history silently and permanently. The operator lowers it once they have
measured how fast this swarm accumulates.
OTLP needs no flag. Measured against the pinned 1.146.0 rather than
inferred from the module's option list, which has no OTLP switch and so
reads as though the feature were missing: the running server answers
POST /opentelemetry/api/v1/push with 200, where a nonexistent path
answers 400.
