The issue-comments endpoint takes no page or limit, so `comments
--since` cut its window client-side from a whole-list response. The
leftover over-fetch-by-one request (`.page_size(limit + 1)`) was a
no-op and the `--limit` clamp to MAX_LIMIT (49) guarded a truncation
check that no longer needs one.
Drop both: `--since T --limit N` now returns N comments. `comments
--json` still emits `since_limit_clamped`, always `false`. `timeline`
is untouched; its endpoint pages and its clamp stays.
The forge's issue-comments endpoint takes no page or limit and always
returns the whole thread. #5055 wrapped view's fetch in all_pages, which
never saw a short page on a thread of 50+ comments and fetched the same
list 50 times: `issue view 3782` printed 3000 comments instead of 60.
`comments --limit K` sent K as a page size the forge ignored, so it
returned the whole thread.
view and pr status's last_comment now send one request. comments fetches
the thread once and cuts the --limit / --tail window client-side; the
X-Total-Count probe and the computed-page tail walk are gone, and the
count of comments outside the window is the length of the list.
--since is unchanged.
tests/comments_no_paging.rs runs the binary against a loopback mock
forge whose comments route ignores page and limit, as Forgejo's does.
The forge clamps page_size to 50. branches, pr reviews, the review
bodies merged into `comments <pr>`, and view's comment list each sent
one request, so anything past the first page was dropped silently.
labels::repo_labels did loop, but asked for 100/page and stopped on
`len < 100`, so a clamped full page of 50 ended the walk.
Add verbs::all_pages: requests 50/page until a short page, capped at
50 pages with a stderr warning when the cap is hit. Use it in all of
the above; repo-labels now calls labels::repo_labels instead of its
own copy of the loop.
list --json now prints the same "N of M shown" stderr trailer as the
pretty output; its paging and stdout shape are unchanged.
Closes#5051
Rewrites every write-good.Passive hit in the hive-forge clap help text
into terse, imperative, active voice (meaning unchanged) and drops
clap-markdown's own fixed footer ('This document was generated
automatically by...') via MarkdownOptions::show_footer(false), since
that string isn't ours to reword and vale flagged it too.
docs/tools/{hivectl,swarmctl,forge}-cli.md are generated from each
crate's clap tree (see hive-forge/src/main.rs's MarkdownDocs verb) —
regenerated here from the fixed source, not hand-edited.
Refs #4549
fetch_total read issue_get_issue's comments field, Forgejo's running
counter on the Issue object that also increments for several
non-prose event kinds (review_request, issue_ref, comment_ref,
pull_push, ...) that issue_get_comments never returns. Diffing that
count against a fetched window reported drift that was never real: a
comment that would never be shown at any window size. Live repro on
PR #4333 (damocles's diagnosis on the issue): more_after: 2, both
events non-prose.
Fix: read the total straight off issue_get_comments's own
X-Total-Count header instead — the same endpoint that produces the
window, so the two populations can never drift apart again. Mirrors
timeline.rs's own fetch_total, which made the same move for its
endpoint first. fetch_head now captures the header from the request
it already makes (one fewer round trip in the --limit path); the
--tail/default path still probes once via page_size=1, same shape as
before but now scoped to the endpoint that actually produces the
window.
This also fixes the more serious half: fetch_tail derives its
pagination offset (which page holds the tail) from the same total, so
an inflated total didn't just skew the trailer's count, it could send
the offset math reaching for a page beyond the real thread's end,
returning fewer rows than requested or none at all when fetch_tail's
empty-page guard tripped. New test pins this against fetch_tail's
existing pagination-plan helper.
Refs #4335
Mara's decision on #4179: the default window for comments/timeline (no
flags at all) is now the newest 10, matching an explicit --tail 10 --
agent can still opt into the old oldest-first window via an explicit
--limit. Same restructure in both verbs: limit u64 -> Option<u64>, only
the explicit-limit branch takes the head path now, the tail-or-default
branch covers both --tail N and the no-flags case.
timeline.rs also gets the real fix: TimelineListHeaders.x_total_count is
a genuine field forgejo-api already returns on every timeline call --
verified against the vendored crate source. The old 'no total exists'
premise in the module doc was false, same shape as #3200. Replaced the
over-fetch-by-one boolean 'more' with an exact count via a cheap
page_size=1 fetch_total, mirroring comments.rs's fetch_tail pagination
math for --tail. JSON output reshaped to {events, more_before,
more_after, since_more, since_limit_clamped}, matching comments.rs --
a breaking interface change, intentional.
Also fixed a real pre-existing bug in comments.rs's truncation_note:
the more_before message suggested retrying with --tail, which is
nonsensical since more_before only ever fires from a tail-shaped
window. Now correctly suggests --limit. Added a regression test.
fixes#4179
Drop implementation detail from the clap arg help (the `<verb> --help`
surface) — which API/endpoint, page-count math, persisted-vs-streamer
log-source internals, refspec shapes — keeping only what/when-to-use for
each flag. Module `//!` docs (dev-facing, not shown by `--help`) left
intact.
Rebuild on forge's own notification read-state instead of the local
seen-cursor mirror (operator-nacked: mirrors state forge owns + drifts
on restart).
- comment refuses to post when forge has an unread notification for the
thread (someone commented since you last read it); --force overrides.
Degrades open if the notification check itself fails.
- comments / view mark the thread's notification read (the "I've seen
it" signal), clearing the guard for a subsequent reply.
- new crate::notify (no local file): unread_thread_id pages repo-scoped
unread notifications (newest-first, capped) + subject-url number match;
mark_thread_read via the new client.patch_no_content.
Pairs with the forge_notify harness change (#1895, merged) that leaves
delivered notifications unread until the agent actually reads. Covers
pr/issue comment too (they delegate to comment::run).
Group issue/PR operations under `pr` and `issue` parent commands
(`hive-forge pr close 42`, `issue create …`, `pr status --pr 42`) per the
operator decision — kind-namespaced verbs replace the flat surface.
- new `verbs::pr_cmd` / `verbs::issue_cmd` parent commands wrap the existing
per-verb modules (reuse their Args + run fns) under `#[command(subcommand)]`.
- kind-validation (the win over the old generic verbs): the generics that work
on both (view/comment/comments/close/labels/assign/timeline) call
`assert_kind` first, so `pr close <issue>` / `issue close <pr>` are rejected
with a 'use the other command' message. PR-only / issue-only verbs are
kind-correct by construction. `number` exposed `pub(crate)` on the shared
verbs so the wrappers can probe it.
- every flat kind verb (`close`, `pr-create`, `pr-status`, `issue-edit`, …)
kept as a `#[command(hide = true)]` back-compat alias — still parses, dropped
from --help; removed in a later sweep once usage migrates. (`pr`/`issue`
bare-show become `pr show` / `issue show` — the names are now parents.)
- docs/tools/forge.md documents the new surface + the deprecated aliases.
cargo build/clippy/fmt clean, 54 tests pass; --help surface + alias parsing
smoke-tested.
Clean the legacy backlog so the tracker-tag lint can become a required
gate (mara's warn-during-cleanup -> full-tree-enforcement path). Rewrite
the ~33 real `closes/see #NNN` provenance refs in doc-comments to prose
across hive-forge, hive-c0re, hive-ag3nt, hive-matrix-mcp, hive-sh4re,
and add a `lint:allow` line marker to check-issue-refs.sh for genuine
non-tracker `#<digits>` (a hash-digit heading-detection test input).
Tree is now lint-clean; tracker-tag lint ready to promote to required.
Add `hivectl gateway {create-user,delete-user,list-users}` subcommands for
managing htpasswd files used by gateway Basic auth. Pure Rust bcrypt
(cost 12, $2y$ prefix nginx accepts). No external htpasswd binary required.
Also fix the NixOS module assertion: `cfg.auth ? htpasswdFile` is always
true in the module system (declared options always exist as keys); switch
to `nullOr path; default = null` + `!= null` check so the assertion
actually fires with a useful error when enable=true but no file is set.
Guard bind-mount and nginx config against null to prevent eval errors.
Update docs/gateway.md to show hivectl commands instead of raw htpasswd.
All crates now pass `cargo clippy --workspace -- -D warnings` cleanly.
Fixes span six crates (hive-sh4re, hive-ag3nt, hive-c0re, hive-forge,
hive-priv, hive-matrix-mcp was already clean):
- doc_markdown: wrap snake_case, type names, constants in backticks
- collapsible_if / collapsible_match: fold nested ifs into let-chains
- duration_suboptimal_units: Duration::from_secs(N) → from_mins/from_hours
- implicit_hasher: allow on HashMap-param fns where generalization is risky
- items_after_statements: hoist use to function tops
- map(f).unwrap_or(x) → map_or(x, f); map(f).unwrap_or_else(g) → map_or_else
- is_ok_and / is_none_or in place of map().unwrap_or(bool)
- needless_continue: {} instead of continue in loop match arms
- match_same_arms: Ok(None) | Err(_) merged
- format_push_str: write!() instead of push_str(&format!())
- while let replaces loop { let Some(..) = x else { break } }
- struct_excessive_bools / dead_code: allow on purpose-built structs
- too_many_lines / too_many_arguments: allow where refactor not worth it
- unused_async: remove async from poll_once in bash_runner
- needless_borrow: fix &repo deref in hive-forge comments verb
- cast_possible_truncation: allow u64→usize in fetch_tail

mara: 'those comments seem very redundant'. true — the 16 pure-GET
verbs all got the same 'transport error + stdout I/O' boilerplate,
which just restates the Result<()> contract that's trivially
derivable from the type.
dropped # Errors from: assign, branches, close, comment_show,
comments, diff, issue, labels, lint, list, milestone, pr,
pr_reviews, subscription, timeline, tree_sha, view (17 files).
kept on the 7 verbs that have a non-Forgejo failure surface worth
documenting:
- comment, comment_edit, issue_create, issue_edit — body input I/O
via --body-file / stdin
- pr_create — body input + --push shellout to git
- attach::run_issue, attach::run_comment — explicit bail! on
missing file
net: 23 verbs touched in the original PR → 17 trimmed back to
no-doc, 6 kept (with the 7th call being attach::run_comment in the
same file). 38 tests still pass.
systemic gap argus flagged on PR #798 (timeline verb). every `pub fn
run` in hive-forge/src/verbs/*.rs lacked a `# Errors` block —
violates Rust API guidelines + obscures the failure surface for
operators reading the source.
uniform doc per verb category:
- pure GET + print verbs: "transport error from the Forgejo REST call
+ I/O error from stdout"
- body-from-file verbs (comment/comment_edit/issue_create/issue_edit/
pr_create): adds 'I/O error from --body-file/stdin input'
- file-upload verbs (attach-issue, attach-comment): adds 'file
read/exist check'
- pr_create: also mentions the --push shellout
23 `pub fn run` signatures touched. no behaviour change; pure
documentation sweep. cargo test green (38 tests).
read the issue's `comments` count first, compute which page contains the
tail, fetch only `ceil(n/50) + 1` pages. drops the TAIL_MAX_PAGES cap
entirely — it was paging from the WRONG end (first 1000 comments instead
of the last n) on long threads, defeating the whole purpose of --tail.
work is now bounded by n, not by thread length.
