60268b70b0 hive-tls: a store-only host without a hive starts its gateway with the store sealed
A gateway host without a hive whose only swarm name is the store's UI no
longer waits for swarm-services-cert: its nginx carries the stream
passthrough to the store and must come up while the store is sealed. Until
the services leaf lands, hive-gateway-self-signed-cert installs a throwaway
self-signed pair on the default and swarm-services paths there; on a host
without a hive it never references the hive leaf.

A host without a hive also no longer mints the hive-leaf identity or
defaults the options pointing at it, and does not render the hive-domain
vhost, whose upstream is hive-c0re.

75a7dccee6 hive-tls: no hive leaf or hive identity on a gateway host without a hive
A self-signed gateway on a host with deploy.hive-controller.enable off
(a dedicated swarm-services host) needed the hive leaf for its catch-all,
and that leaf now comes only from hive-tls-resign with a per-hive store
identity. hive-tls-resign and its timer are now defined only where a hive
runs; elsewhere hive-gateway-self-signed-cert installs the swarm-services
leaf as the default cert, and the gateway waits for swarm-services-cert.
Also corrects the hive-gateway comments and option text that still said
the leaf is hive-CA-signed.

fc33a62bf8 hive-tls: keep ca-key.pem on disk, and re-issue a leaf that does not match its key
hive-tls-ca no longer deletes a ca-key.pem an earlier generation left:
nothing reads it, and leaving it means a rollback finds the old key instead
of minting a new anchor. Deleting it moves to PR 3, beside dropping ca.pem
from the trust bundle.

hive-tls-resign now also re-issues when the leaf's public key differs from
the key file's. The leaf and key are moved into place by two renames, and an
interrupted pair left a certificate beside the wrong key that the validity
check accepted.

5526daab97 hive-tls: issue the gateway leaf from bao with a per-hive identity
Every hive gets its own store identity (CN
<deploy.bao.hiveLeafCommonNamePrefix>-<hive>) and its own role on the
existing pki mount (<deploy.bao.hiveLeafPkiRolePrefix>-<hive>), whose
allowed_domains is the hive's domain and *.<domain>. The policy grants
update on that one issue path. swarm-bao-hive-leaf-policy writes role,
policy and cert-auth role for every hive in swarm.hives; the store's host
mints its own hive's identity in glue-bao-tls.nix and a new glue file
points deploy.hive-controller.tls.baoHiveIdentity{Cert,Key}File at it.
Hives on other hosts place it by hand. swarm.nix reserves the composed CN.

hive-tls-ca no longer generates a hive CA or signs a leaf: caGenScript,
signLeafScript/signHiveLeaf and the adoption block are gone, ca-key.pem
is deleted where it exists, and the unit only assembles trust-bundle.pem.
The retired ca.pem/ca-previous.pem stay in the bundle so leaves they
signed keep verifying.

hive-tls-resign becomes the bao issuance: at boot, on deploy and from a
daily timer it re-issues when the leaf is missing, past half the role's
lifetime, missing a name, or not chained to the store's pki root. Nothing
orders the gateway after it, so a valid leaf on disk never waits on the
store; a failed renewal leaves the leaf in place. A missing identity
fails the unit naming both options, as does the root fetch on a hive
fronting no swarm name, which now presents this identity instead of the
reader cert.

caValidityDays and leafValidityDays are removed (both spellings), since
nothing reads them.

bed4358e19 swarm options: no swarm.* value depends on a deploy option or this host's hive
- swarm.serviceDomains lists every swarm service name on every host. The
store's issuing role is built from it, so the store now admits a leaf
for grafana, metrics, otel, logs, the bao UI and the apex whichever host
runs the store. Each gateway's own leaf stays narrowed by
  localServiceDomains.
- swarm.matrix.apiUrl defaults to http://<swarm.matrix.gatewayHost>
(null when gatewayHost is null) instead of loopback on the matrix host.
- The authelia vhost proxies /bridge/ to swarm-authelia-bridge with the
prefix stripped, and deploy.swarm-controller.authBridgeUrl defaults to
${swarm.authelia.url}/bridge on every host. swarm.authelia.bridgeUrl is
  removed.
- swarm-authelia-bridge admits only swarm-controller's OIDC client on
every request (403 for any other active token), configured by
  SWARM_AUTHELIA_BRIDGE_CONTROLLER_CLIENT_ID (renamed from
  ..._OPERATOR_READER_CLIENT_ID, which gated ListOperators alone).
- swarm.peerHives is removed; swarm-wireguard.nix filters this host's own
  hive out of swarm.hives itself.

849bf46550 hive-tls: fail swarm-services-cert when the store identity is absent
A hive fronting no swarm name fetches the store's pki root presenting its
reader certificate. When deploy.bao.clientCertFile or clientKeyFile is unset,
or either named file is not readable, the unit now exits 1 with a message
naming both options and their paths, instead of exiting 0 with the root
missing from the trust bundle.

The module-eval cases that asserted the quiet skip assert the failure
instead, and a new case covers the named-but-absent files.

56335b24c0 hive-tls: skip the store root fetch on a hive with no store identity
The `want_svc=0` root fetch presents `deploy.bao.clientCertFile`/
`clientKeyFile` to a listener that demands a client certificate. On a
hive with neither set, the handshake is refused every time, and
`swarm-services-cert` went from green to failed-and-retrying for 24h.

The branch is now chosen at eval: with no reader identity, the unit
logs that the store root was not staged and names the option, then
exits 0, and no fetch is rendered. A hive with an identity fetches as
before. `hivectl peer-config` already handles the absent file.

72f5e39278 hive-tls: stage bao pki root in every hive's trust bundle
A self-signed hive fronting no swarm service name never filled
`$svcroot` (/var/lib/hive-tls/swarm-services-root.pem): the only writer
was `swarm-services-cert`'s issuance, which exits early on
`want_svc=0`. So those hives' trust-bundle.pem lacked the store's `pki`
root, even though every other hive's swarm-service names chain to it.

On `want_svc=0`, `swarm-services-cert` now reads the root from the
store's unauthenticated `GET /v1/pki/ca/pem`, over the hive's existing
BAO_ADDR, `deploy.bao.serverCaFile` and reader identity
(`deploy.bao.clientCertFile`/`clientKeyFile`) at the TLS layer only; no
login. It writes `$svcroot` and restarts `hive-tls-ca` when the root
changed, as the issuing path already does. The daily
`swarm-services-cert-renew` timer runs the same script, so the copy
follows a root rotation.

The gateway no longer `Requires=` `swarm-services-cert` on such a host:
nginx reads nothing that unit writes there, and the fetch retries
against a sealed store.

`hivectl peer-config` prints the root as step 2 of the self-signed
instructions: the swarm's service names are issued under it, not the
swarm root.

No new option. Refs #4588.

3898ca33c7 bao: serve the browser UI to admins via a loopback-only listener
openbao gains a second listener, `ui`, on 127.0.0.1:<deploy.bao.uiPort>
(default 8204) with TLS off and no client-certificate requirement, and
`ui = true`. The existing listeners are unchanged. An nginx inside the
store's container, on 127.0.0.1:<deploy.bao.uiProxyPort> (default 8206),
forwards only /ui/ and /v1/ to it, redirects / to /ui/, answers 403 on
sys/unseal, sys/seal, sys/step-down, sys/rekey* and sys/generate-root*,
and 404 on everything else.

The gateway on the store's host serves `swarm.bao.ui.domain` (default
bao-ui.<swarm>) behind the authelia auth_request subrequest, proxying to
that nginx; the name joins serviceDomains and localNames like every
other gateway-published swarm service. authelia gets an access_control
rule restricting that name to group:admins, rendered wherever authelia
runs, since the default policy admits any session.

Trade-off, ruled by the operator on the parent issue: the UI listener
asks for no client certificate, so on that door a bao token alone is the
credential.

Three comments and a doc line claimed every API listener demands a
client certificate; they now except the loopback UI listener. The
module-eval case counting declared listeners excludes `ui` by name, as
it already did `metrics`.

On a self-signed gateway, the UI's name is a swarm service name, so its
host requests the services leaf from the store. `swarm-services-cert`
sits Before= and RequiredBy= the gateway's cert import, which nginx
Requires=. On a host whose only swarm name is the UI, that would hold
nginx, and with it the stream passthrough every reader dials, on a login
to a store that may be sealed. hive-tls drops those two edges exactly
when the UI is the only local swarm name: nginx starts on the existing
hive-leaf fallback, and the script's existing re-import reloads nginx
once the leaf issues. Every other host keeps both edges.

ed2ec52fe5 swarm-tls: narrow each gateway's services leaf to the names it fronts
Every gateway asked the store's `pki/issue/swarm-services` for the whole
swarm's service set, so a private key on any gateway host could serve a
valid certificate for services that host does not front and never has.

`swarm.localServiceDomains` derives the per-host subset by filtering
`swarm.serviceDomains` against the vhosts this host actually renders —
the deploy flags those vhosts are already guarded on, read once rather
than copied into a second filter. The leaf request and the coverage
guard that decides whether to re-issue both read it, so they cannot
disagree about which names the leaf owes.

The sub-CA's name constraint and the role's `allowed_domains` stay the
swarm-wide set: every host's subset is inside it, and narrowing the
constraint per host would turn one signing into N.

0649673ebf hive-tls: renew the swarm-services leaf on a daily timer
The store's `swarm-services` role issues the services leaf for 720h, and
`swarm-services-cert` only ever ran at boot or rebuild: it is a
`RemainAfterExit` oneshot wanted by `multi-user.target` and no timer
targeted it. A hive not rebuilt within 30 days served an expired leaf.

`swarm-services-cert-renew` runs the same script from a daily timer. It
is a unit of its own because a timer starting the `RemainAfterExit` unit
is a no-op, and restarting that unit instead would propagate through
`hive-gateway-self-signed-cert`'s `Requires=` to nginx, so a sealed store
would take the gateway down over a still-valid leaf. Nothing requires or
orders against the new unit; it has no `Restart=`, so a failure stays in
`systemctl --failed` until the next tick, and the script only moves files
into place after the store has answered.

The re-issue threshold was `checkend 2592000`, the whole 30-day
lifetime, so every run re-issued. It is now half the role's lifetime,
read from a new internal option `deploy.bao.servicesPkiLeafTtlHours`
that the role's `ttl`/`max_ttl` also read. Boot and timer share the
script and so the threshold. The services-root re-check reads the
same option, at the store's own replacement threshold (hours × 3600),
so the hive asks for a new leaf when the store replaces its root. A
`flock` keeps the two runs from interleaving one issuance's key with another's leaf.

`checks.module-eval-hive-tls` pins the timer, that the unit it starts
re-runs the issuance without `RemainAfterExit`, that nothing depends on
it, and that both the leaf and root thresholds move with the option.

f4df4fc4a9 nix: issue the swarm-services leaf from bao's pki mount
The `pki` mount had no issuer and no principal could log in to it, so the
swarm's service certificates were still minted by two openssl hops from a
root key on disk. Close both halves and retire the openssl path with them.

The mount now generates its own root, once. The granting unit asks bao
whether an issuer already exists (`bao list pki/issuers`) before calling
`pki/root/generate/internal`, so a rebuild or a reboot re-asserts the role
and the grant without touching the anchor — a root that changed per boot
would invalidate every certificate issued under it and every browser
taught to trust it. The guard asks the store rather than looking for a
marker file on this host's disk: a file is a claim about a mount that may
have been restored from a snapshot or disabled and re-enabled underneath
it.

`swarm-services-issuer` stops being an inert policy. A fourth cert-auth
role attaches it, following the shape the controller, the publisher and
matrix-ctl already use, and glue-bao-tls.nix signs the leaf carrying its
CN — that credential is what opens the mount, so it cannot come out of it.

`swarm-services-cert.service` logs in with that leaf, calls
`pki/issue/swarm-services`, and writes the result to the path
hive-tls.nix already wrote and the gateway already copies from. The
sub-CA layer does not move; it stops existing. The role's
`allowed_domains`, read from the same `swarm.serviceDomains` the SANs
come from, enforces at issue time what the sub-CA encoded in x509
`nameConstraints`, and with the root inside the mount there is nothing
left for an intermediate to be an intermediate of.

Not a flag day: the issuing root is published beside the leaf as
`swarm-services-root.pem` (0644) and joins `trust-bundle.pem`, where the
swarm root still sits. A leaf chaining to the old sub-CA and one issued
by the store both verify against the same bundle, so hives can be
rebuilt in any order. The same file is what an operator hands a browser
— readable without a store login, which matters because every listener
demands a client certificate.

The eval-time warning about uncovered service names is gone rather than
reworded. It fired on "this host does not hold the swarm root key", which
was the reason a hive could end up serving its own leaf on a
swarm-service name. Every hive now asks the store with its own identity,
so that stopped being the thing that decides.

04e27c4fb6 docs: suppress reviewed write-good.Passive false positives
133 hits across 38 files, all previously classified during #4548's sweep
and deliberately left un-rewritten (predicate-adjective state/necessity
description, design-intent idiom, structural/type-description idiom,
no-single-actor topology claim, parallel-triple exception, vale
substring-match artifact — see hyperhive#4548's per-PR bodies for the
per-hit reasoning).

Wraps each one in a scoped <!-- vale write-good.Passive = NO/YES -->
pair (the supported mechanism — TokenIgnores has a known offset-drift
bug) rather than a blanket per-file or per-rule silence, so a *new*
passive-voice hit anywhere in these files still fails once the rule
gates CI (next commit). Table/list false positives (docs/swarm/credentials.md's
renewal-table cells) wrap the whole block, not each cell.

Part of #4546.

f22791b7a4 docs: clear the remaining error-level vale lints
Per #4128 (mara: allow-everywhere false positives go in a central
list, otherwise fix in source). Testing surfaced better fixes than
the plan posted on the issue:

- 5x Microsoft.Contractions 'that is' idiom false positives: adding
the missing comma ("that is, ...") both reads better and satisfies
the rule's own negative-lookahead, so no suppression is needed at
  all. Fixed in docs/integrations/forge.md, docs/tools/forge.md,
  docs/tools/hivectl.md, docs/web-ui/dashboard.md, and
  swarmctl-cli.md's generated source (swarmctl/src/main.rs, doc
  comment regenerated via markdown-docs).
- persistence.md's 'is not' matching inside 'is nothing': reworded to
'there'\''s nothing' rather than add any exception -- dodges the trap
and is a genuine contraction besides.
- ca.md's 'it is' matching inside the already-correct 'it isn'\''t':
tried a central .vale.ini TokenIgnores entry first per the
allow-everywhere framing, but testing against the real file (not
just a synthetic snippet) found it silently fails to suppress
whenever markdown emphasis syntax appears earlier in the same
file -- an offset-drift bug in how Vale applies TokenIgnores, not
a config mistake. Reworded to "it'\''s not" instead, same fix
  shape as persistence.md.
- config.md's 3 genuine Microsoft.Avoid 'backend' exceptions (already
flagged and accepted on #4139 -- an actually-pluggable LLM API
provider, matching the nix option's own name, not one internal
system to name): scoped inline vale suppression around just that
section, since this one really is context-specific rather than a
  rule bug.

Verified: fresh 'vale docs/ --minAlertLevel=error' is 0 errors AND
0 warnings (was 10 errors). nix fmt 0 changed beyond the edits
themselves. pre-push lints (tracker-tag/comment-block/doc-pointer)
clean. cargo clippy -p swarmctl -- -D warnings clean. Diffed the
regenerated swarmctl-cli.md against the old copy to confirm only
the intended line moved.

fab2a0dedc docs: fix genuine passive-voice hits in docs/swarm
Read all 94 write-good.Passive hits across docs/swarm/ (ca.md,
README.md, secrets.md, services.md, sso.md, ui.md) in context. 44 are
genuine catches with a nameable, usually already-established actor
(swarm-controller, authelia, swarmctl, the controller, the gateway,
this module, hyperhive itself, or 'the operator' for manual actions) —
rewritten to active. 50 are legitimate passives or false catches, left
alone: predicate-adjective state descriptions (is expected/misconfigured/
broken), negative-capability idioms (no X is needed/placed, can't be
Yed/listed/fetched), config-state conditionals (whenever/when X is
enabled/configured/set), requirement-list labels (is required),
'is tracked as' idiom, backward-looking changelog facts with no actor
(was removed/verified/introduced), ambiguous-actor statements left
conservatively alone (agents are created and destroyed — could be
hive-c0re or swarm-controller, doc doesn't say), and a couple of
deliberately-parallel idiom pairs.

Several sibling-inconsistency fixes: a passive clause sitting next to
an already-active sibling describing the same fact/mechanism (ca.md's
two-bullet consumer list, README's 4-item WireGuard-mesh bullet list,
README's controller-registers-hooks paragraph, sso.md's followed-a-302
sentence).

Verified via vale on the whole directory, diffed against main's exact
baseline (not just the Passive count): write-good.Passive 94 -> 50
exactly, every other category unchanged (1 pre-existing
Microsoft.Contractions error at services... at secrets.md:182,
8 TooWordy, 1 Microsoft.We, 1 Microsoft.FirstPerson — same counts,
same locations).

e82a735745 docs: fix write-good.So/ThereIs/Weasel lint findings
Fixes the "obvious ones first" slice of #4042 (mara: do the obvious
ones first) -- 81 hits across write-good.So, write-good.ThereIs, and
write-good.Weasel, all in docs/. Each is a genuine sentence rewrite
(lead with the real subject instead of "There is/are", drop a
sentence-initial "So ", replace a vague intensifier), not a blind
regex substitution -- read every hit in its real file context before
touching it.

3 of the 81 hits were in CI-generated CLI docs (docs/tools/{hivectl,
swarmctl,forge}-cli.md) -- fixed at the clap #[arg(...)]/doc-comment
source in hivectl/src/cli.rs, swarmctl/src/main.rs, and
hive-forge/src/verbs/repo_add_collaborator.rs, then regenerated via
each crate's `markdown-docs` subcommand so CI's freshness check stays
green.

Verified: fresh vale re-run shows 0 remaining So/ThereIs/Weasel hits
and no new hits introduced (983->982, exactly the one incidental fix
this pass also picked up at docs/scheduler/observability.md:48).
cargo fmt --check and clippy clean on the three touched crates.

Remaining write-good backlog (Passive: 726, TooWordy: 207) is

rewritten here.

ff377b0dee docs: fix capitalization losses + one text corruption from the contractions pass
Review pass on top of the previous commit (85a94671) turned up three
real issues its own vale-only verification didn't catch:

- 'has not' -> 'hasn't' fired inside 'has nothing', corrupting
docs/swarm/README.md into 'hasn'thing to say upward'. Restored
  'has nothing'.
- ~44 hits where the original text was genuinely sentence-initial
('It is', 'That is', 'They are', 'What is', 'Do not', ...) got
contracted in lowercase, silently de-capitalizing the start of a
sentence. Checked each one's real surrounding text and capitalized
  the ones that needed it.
- Confirmed (by reading the actual text, not just trusting vale) that
the 3 remaining 'is not'/'has not'/'it is' hits after those fixes are
vale's own false positives: it matches these as a bare substring with
no trailing word boundary, so it also fires on 'is nothing', 'has
nothing', and the already-correct 'it isn't'. Left those alone --
there's no real issue in the text.

Re-verified with a fresh vale run: the remaining 17 hits are exactly
the union of the 14 legitimate ALL-CAPS/bold-emphasis skips from the
first commit and these 3 false positives. Full accounting in
/agents/iris/state/haiku-batches/contractions-report.md.

that both root key and root cert are runtime files — the cert as a
consequence, and that one costs something real, since nothing whose trust
store is built at build time can name it. Everything behind those is a
`docs/x.md::Section` pointer with the heading checked to exist.

Dropped the O(n²)-per-peer-pinning story: the live reason is that one root
is O(1), and how it used to be configured is history.

In the doc, *Distributing the root* now links to *Constraints on the
material* rather than restating it. Intra-doc `#anchor` links are already
the convention there — 85 of them across `docs/`, 8 in `gateway.md` alone.

Comments + one doc paragraph; no behaviour change. Refs #3901.

daa6eb96f8 deploy: move the hive CA's knobs to deploy.hive-controller.tls
`services.hyperhive.tls.{stateDir,caValidityDays,leafValidityDays}` sat at
the top of `services.hyperhive`, which is meant to be everything about
hyperhive rather than the settings of one hive. Where the hive CA lives,
how long it lasts and how long the leaves it signs last are decisions of
the host holding the key — `deploy.*`, by the same rule as the switches
that moved before them.

`hive-controller` is hive-c0re's new name (mara on the issue), so the
knobs hang off the daemon that owns the CA rather than off a bare `tls`
at the root. mkRenamedOptionModule entries carry existing configs.

⚠️ Unlike the two switch renames, these names are NOT unique, so this was
swept by ALIAS BINDING rather than by identifier: hive-tls.nix alone holds
two options spelled `stateDir` — its own `cfg.stateDir` and the swarm CA's
`swarmCaCfg.stateDir`, four sites that must not move. Nine files bind an
alias to this config; the rename followed those bindings.

Two sites were invisible to the obvious check, and an unanchored sweep for
`hyperhive\.tls\b` is what found them: the option declaration (`= {` after
the path, so no trailing `.` or `;`) and the alias convention documented in
a comment in lib/hive-ca-trust.nix.

Also renamed the `<tls.stateDir>` shorthand in four docs and two Rust doc
comments, anchored on its delimiters — the new path contains the old one
as a substring, so an unanchored replace would have doubled the prefix.

97a7b518ea deploy: rename enableAllLocalDefaults to deploy.singleHostSwarm
Same defect as the switch below it, one tier up: it sat at the TOP of
`services.hyperhive`, a namespace that is meant to be everything about
hyperhive rather than the settings of a single hive. Whether this box is
the whole deployment is as per-host as a decision gets.

The name follows mara's sentence for what it means — "everything in the
swarm is running on this host" — rather than naming its mechanism.
"Defaults" was doing no work: it is not a defaults toggle, it is a claim
about where the swarm lives, and the pair now reads as the containment it
already was, singleHostSwarm implying allSwarmServices plus this hive.

One site was a setter rather than a reference: module-eval's `allLocal`
fixture passes an attrset merged into `services.hyperhive`, so its key
carries the path and had to become `deploy.singleHostSwarm`. A rename by
bare identifier is right for the twelve prose mentions and wrong for
exactly this one, which is worth knowing before the next rename.

038d085001 feat(nix): the matrix container gets the swarm-internal trust anchor
`security.pki.certificateFiles` is read when the system is BUILT and the
swarm root is deliberately a runtime file (its key must never enter the
world-readable store), so there was nothing build-time to name and the
container trusted no swarm-internal CA. Federation with a peer whose
cert chains to the swarm root did not validate.

The bridge already existed: `lib/hive-ca-trust.nix`, which `hive-ci` and
`hive-forge` both cross. This wires the matrix container to it -- read-only
bind of the trust bundle, container ordered after `hive-tls-ca.service` --
rather than inventing a second mechanism.

Consumption is the per-runtime half, and it is not what it looks like.
tuwunel links no openssl, which makes `SSL_CERT_FILE` appear inapplicable.
It isn't: the outbound client is `reqwest` with the `rustls` feature,
which builds a `rustls_platform_verifier::Verifier`, and because tuwunel
calls `tls_certs_merge` (additive) rather than `tls_certs_only`, the
platform roots stay alongside its compiled-in webpki set. On Linux that
verifier resolves through `rustls-native-certs` to `openssl-probe`, which
reads `SSL_CERT_FILE`. Established by reading tuwunel 1.8.0 and reqwest
0.13.4 source, not inferred from the feature list -- an earlier reading of
mine concluded the opposite from the absence of a `native-roots` feature
name and was wrong.

The variable therefore names a CONCATENATION (system CAs + the bundle),
never the anchor alone: `openssl-probe` uses it *instead of* the default
store, so pointing it at the bundle would drop every public CA and break
federation with the wider matrix network -- trading a small outage for a
much larger one.

`container@hive-matrix` needed `mkMerge`: it already assigned `after` for
the gateway ordering and the helper contributes its own `after`/`requires`,
so two bare assignments would have conflicted rather than combined.

⚠️ Gate honesty: `state/eval-3093.sh` proves the mount, the ordering, the
bundle service and the env var are RENDERED -- 6 probes, including two
separate absence probes (mount and consumption are wired at different
sites, and the gateway outage happened precisely because two of three
sites tolerated a missing cert and the third did not). It CANNOT prove
tuwunel loads them: a build that ignores the variable evaluates
identically to one that honours it, and the chain above is
version-specific. That half wants an executed check on a real deploy.

433b294099 refactor(nix): swarm.peers becomes swarm.hives, a directory of every hive
One attrset describing every hive in the swarm including this one,
identical on every host, with hiveName selecting which entry is us.
"My peers" is derived (swarm.peerHives) rather than declared.

Every field in the old per-host peer list was intrinsic to the hive it
described, never to the pair -- so the list was a directory each host
kept its own copy of. Beyond the deduplication it removes a bug class:
two hosts could hold different endpoints for the same third hive with
nothing to detect the disagreement.

Drops the per-hive caCert. Trust inside a swarm derives from the swarm
root, which every hive chains to. What that genuinely removes is
trusting a hive whose root this swarm does not own -- a cross-swarm
problem that wants a mechanism of its own, not a field that happened to
work.

The matrix container's certificateFiles block goes with it and could
NOT be migrated: that list is read at build time and the swarm root is
a runtime file (its key must never enter the store), so there is no
build-time name to put there. caCert being a nix path was precisely
what made it the build-time distribution channel. Agents are unaffected
-- hive-tls folds the root into the hive trust bundle and the meta
renderer embeds that one file. Tracked separately.

Migration is an assertion plus warnings, not a rename: hives is peers
union {self}, and the set gains a member no existing config has written
down. A rename migrates a name and a default can re-root a meaning;
neither can conjure a new member. The warning explains, the self-entry
assertion stops the build.

591d0e789f docs(swarm): document the two adoption paths

half true: where the host owns the root it happens by itself, and the

bcd4fbd918 docs(swarm): cut the CA material into its own page
Second split under docs/swarm/, following the shape docs/turn-loop/ and
docs/web-ui/ already use.

The README keeps the `## Swarm CA` heading rather than deleting it: an
existing cross-reference targets that anchor, and a heading is the
cheapest thing to preserve. It now carries the one-paragraph summary and
a pointer, so a reader who lands on the anchor still arrives somewhere
that answers the question.

The CA page also absorbs three things that were true but undocumented —
why the trust bundle rather than the bare intermediate (openssl will not
terminate a chain at a non-self-signed anchor without -partial_chain),
that autoConfigure derives from enableAllLocalDefaults, and that the
name constraint excludes both IP families because a permitted-DNS-only
constraint says nothing about IP SANs.
