mara chose to accept extra queued sweep passes over adding a new
hive-jobq primitive (or a hive-c0re one-off) for "don't queue another
of this kind". Every sweep caller now plain-inserts its node; the
capacity-1 Dep::Resource per sweep kind (MatrixSweep/KnowledgeTree)
still keeps two passes of the same kind from running concurrently, it
just no longer collapses a tick that lands while one is live or queued
into the existing one.
The matrix sweep and the /knowledge pull each had concurrent callers
(#4723 item 4). Two overlapping knowledge pulls fail on .git/index.lock
and the remote-tracking ref lock: 30 of 30 concurrent replays of the
reset/clean/pull sequence in a scratch repo errored, 0 of 10 sequential
ones did. Two overlapping matrix sweeps on a hive with no persisted
Space / chat-room id both miss the by-name lookup and both createRoom
(from reading the code, not reproduced against a homeserver). On every
boot the MatrixSweep DAG node and the main.rs loop's immediate first
call ran at once.
Every sweep now runs as a job node, and each sweep's node holds its own
capacity-1 queue resource (Resource::MatrixSweep,
Resource::KnowledgeTree), the MetaWindow pattern: the scheduler never
starts a second pass of one sweep while the first holds the resource,
and different sweeps still run side by side.
- templates::matrix_sweep / templates::knowledge_pull build the node
with its resource; boot, the periodic loops and the swarm event all
use them.
- JobQueue::insert_unless_live folds a submission into a live node of
the same kind instead of queueing another. Periodic ticks fold into a
queued or running pass. The swarm knowledge event folds into a queued
pull only, and queues one behind a running pull, which may have
fetched before the push.
- The main.rs matrix loop no longer sweeps immediately at startup; the
boot MatrixSweep node is the startup pass, as KnowledgePull already
was for knowledge.
- The executors bound each pass (10 min matrix, 5 min knowledge), since
a hung pass would otherwise hold its resource against every later one,
and own the sweep-health banners, so every pass reports to them.
Replaces the SweepLock version of this branch, per review.
Refs #4723
/etc/tmpfiles.d/hyperhive-agents.conf was a boot-time backstop (#2290)
that pre-created every agent's bind sources. The start preamble already
creates them for every c0re-driven start, and on this host only hive-c0re
starts agent containers. The file was also the reason the socket dir's
owner had to be declared there, which is how it spent its life at
`0777 root root` whenever the uid could not be resolved (#4742).
- hive-priv gains `EnsureAgentSocketDir { name }`, called from
`set_nspawn_flags` in every start path. It creates
`/run/hive-agent/<name>` `0751 root:root` with mkdirat relative to an
O_DIRECTORY|O_NOFOLLOW fd for the parent. An existing entry has to be a
directory (fstatat AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW); anything else is refused, and a
directory is left alone. hive-c0re's own create_dir_all went: its /run
is read-only under ProtectSystem=strict.
- The container's `hive-agent-user-migrate` activation chowns that dir to
the agent user and sets 0751, the same way it already handles state/ and
harness/. It refuses a symlink or non-directory there, since `test -d`
and chmod follow links. No host-side passwd parse, and no window where
the dir is world-writable.
- `/run/hyperhive/agents/<name>` stays created by hive-c0re itself
(`ensure_agent_runtime_dir`). It holds the `mcp.sock` that hive-c0re
binds as hive-core, so it must not become root- or agent-owned.
- The `/run/hive-agent` parent is declared in hive-priv.nix, `0755
root:root`, instead of hive-gateway's hive-core rule. hive-priv is its
only writer now, and hive-priv's ReadWritePaths needs it to exist.
- The manager start in `ensure_root_agent` now goes through
`converge_start_preamble` + `start_with_fallback`. It was a bare start,
so after a reboot the manager's bind sources existed only because of the
tmpfiles file, and its limits drop-in did not exist at all.
- Removed: `sync_tmpfiles`, `agent_uid_gid` / `parse_passwd_uid_gid`,
`priv_client::sync_agent_tmpfiles`, `AgentTmpfilesEntry`, the tmpfiles
body builder and their tests, plus the three call sites.
- Legacy: hive-priv unlinks the file at every start, ignoring ENOENT.
`SyncAgentTmpfiles` stays one release as a payload-ignoring variant that
does the same unlink and returns Ok, for an older hive-c0re.
Salvaged from #4752: the boundary.md correction that nginx only dials,
because ProtectSystem=strict makes its /run read-only.
Behaviour change: a manual `nixos-container start h-<name>` right after a
reboot, before hive-c0re has started that agent, now fails on a missing
bind source instead of starting.
Closes#4742
The topology doc keeps its filename and its second half (manager
special-casing, harness unit shape) — both are cross-referenced from
other pages and neither is about the parent field. Its first half is
rewritten: what topology.json is now, and a table of what the removal
took with it, so a reader who finds `<parent>` or `set-parent` in an old
issue thread learns it went away rather than moved.
The dashboard's tree-rendering section is marked dormant rather than
deleted: the walk is still in swarm.js and retiring it is the frontend
owner's call.
133 hits across 38 files, all previously classified during #4548's sweep
and deliberately left un-rewritten (predicate-adjective state/necessity
description, design-intent idiom, structural/type-description idiom,
no-single-actor topology claim, parallel-triple exception, vale
substring-match artifact — see hyperhive#4548's per-PR bodies for the
per-hit reasoning).
Wraps each one in a scoped <!-- vale write-good.Passive = NO/YES -->
pair (the supported mechanism — TokenIgnores has a known offset-drift
bug) rather than a blanket per-file or per-rule silence, so a *new*
passive-voice hit anywhere in these files still fails once the rule
gates CI (next commit). Table/list false positives (docs/swarm/credentials.md's
renewal-table cells) wrap the whole block, not each cell.
Part of #4546.
5 genuine passive-voice rewrites (actor named — nixos-container
create; the passive construction replaced with an active
intransitive verb or 'nothing can X' phrasing matching the pattern
already established on credentials.md); 4 false positives left
untouched — a type-description idiom ('is typed'), a predicate-
adjective in a parallel triple ('is satisfied' alongside two
untouched siblings), and two already-established categories
('is unaffected', 'is tracked' as a follow-up).
nix fmt table-column-width drift from the earlier comma fix (f3fe0604/82236952)
- shortening that cell by one char left the row under-padded relative to the
table's other rows. Pure whitespace, no content change.
argus's review on this PR caught a real regression: the earlier
passive-voice rewrite ('answers "did the agent come back up?", the
same way...') put a comma immediately outside a closing double-quote,
which vale's Microsoft.Quotes rule flags ("punctuation should be
inside the quotes") -- a brand new error not present on main. The
original phrasing never had a quote directly followed by a comma, so
this was a real side effect of the rewrite, not a pre-existing hit.
Simplest fix: drop the comma. The sentence reads fine without it and
the closing "?" already does the job.
Verified via vale: back to 2 errors (matching main's baseline, down
from the 3 this rewrite introduced), write-good.Passive count
unchanged at 24.
Seventh batch of the ongoing write-good.Passive pass (hyperhive#4042):
read all 65 hits across jobq.md/ci.md/observability.md/coordinator.md
in context and rewrote 41 with a clearly nameable actor -- mostly
hive-c0re, nix/the nix module, the harness, or a specific fn/type
named right there or nearby (coordinator.md's node-inventory table
and DAG-shape descriptions name concrete Rust items constantly, so
the actor is almost always sitting in the same sentence).
Left 24 alone: predicate-adjective-copula state descriptions ("is
stuck", "is gone", "is unaffected", "is done", etc. -- the largest
recurring bucket this batch, especially in observability.md's
scope/status descriptions), negative-capability idioms ("no X is
needed/left", "X can't be written down"), the established "is
tracked as a follow-up" idiom, a firewall-shorthand notation
("bridge->127.0.0.0/8 is dropped") where rewriting would break the
compact rule-like format, a CLI-flag "(repeatable)" annotation ("May
be repeated"), a Rust type-signature fact ("`moves` is typed ..."),
a hypothetical/counterfactual maintenance-burden clause, a
readiness-condition list ("a node is ready when ... every dep is
satisfied"), and one deliberately-parallel idiom pair
("When OTEL is enabled" used identically twice as a section-opening
convention -- fixing one would break the parallelism, not the
opposite).
One self-caught regression: an early attempt to fix "used by every
`Reconcile` node's start action" (a reduced participial clause, not
flagged) into "is used by every `Reconcile` node's start action"
introduced a brand-new flagged passive. Caught by the post-edit vale
count (expected 65->24, got 65->25) not matching, same discipline as
the docs/turn-loop batch's tail-truncation catch -- re-ran with
active voice instead ("Every `Reconcile` node's start action uses
this fallback").
Verified via vale before/after: 65 -> 24 write-good.Passive hits,
exactly the 24 left alone above; error count and other warning
categories unchanged. Re-read every changed line in full surrounding
context after editing before running the final vale check.
Fixes the "obvious ones first" slice of #4042 (mara: do the obvious
ones first) -- 81 hits across write-good.So, write-good.ThereIs, and
write-good.Weasel, all in docs/. Each is a genuine sentence rewrite
(lead with the real subject instead of "There is/are", drop a
sentence-initial "So ", replace a vague intensifier), not a blind
regex substitution -- read every hit in its real file context before
touching it.
3 of the 81 hits were in CI-generated CLI docs (docs/tools/{hivectl,
swarmctl,forge}-cli.md) -- fixed at the clap #[arg(...)]/doc-comment
source in hivectl/src/cli.rs, swarmctl/src/main.rs, and
hive-forge/src/verbs/repo_add_collaborator.rs, then regenerated via
each crate's `markdown-docs` subcommand so CI's freshness check stays
green.
Verified: fresh vale re-run shows 0 remaining So/ThereIs/Weasel hits
and no new hits introduced (983->982, exactly the one incidental fix
this pass also picked up at docs/scheduler/observability.md:48).
cargo fmt --check and clippy clean on the three touched crates.
Remaining write-good backlog (Passive: 726, TooWordy: 207) is
judgment-heavy and left for a follow-up slice of #4042, not bulk-
rewritten here.
Fixes 22 of 23 Microsoft.Hyphens hits: an adverb ending in -ly doesn't
need a hyphen to the word it modifies (minimally scoped, currently
running, deliberately stopped, ...) -- the -ly ending already
unambiguously signals it's modifying the following word, so the
hyphen is redundant per Microsoft style.
Left one hit alone: docs/web-ui/dashboard.md's 'checked-not-originally-
active' is a single 4-word compound designator (parallel structure
with 'unchecked-was-active' right before it in the same sentence,
describing a diffing algorithm's two possible states), not an
ordinary -ly-adverb modifier -- dropping just the one hyphen vale
flagged would have broken the compound into a dangling
'checked-not-originally active' fragment. Also rewrote
docs/scheduler/coordinator.md's 'still-fully-queued' as a predicate
('DAGs that are still fully queued') rather than leaving a similar
broken partial-hyphen chain, since 'still' and 'fully' are both plain
adverbs with no reason to hyphenate at all once dehyphenated
consistently.
Verified via vale: only the one deliberately-left hit remains.
Moved 27 instances of periods and commas from outside closing quote marks
to inside, following American-style punctuation placement. Changes span
across ~15 documentation files including integration, process, scheduler,
trust-boundary, and web-ui docs.
Fixed 72 hyphenated 'auto-X' compounds across the docs by deleting
the hyphen to match Microsoft style guide (autogenerated, autoregistration,
autodiscovery, etc). Preserved original capitalization throughout.
Covered 26 documentation files in docs/, including README.md, agent-lifecycle,
integrations, scheduler, networking, process, tools, trust-boundary,
turn-loop, and web-ui sections.
Review pass on top of the previous commit (85a94671) turned up three
real issues its own vale-only verification didn't catch:
- 'has not' -> 'hasn't' fired inside 'has nothing', corrupting
docs/swarm/README.md into 'hasn'thing to say upward'. Restored
'has nothing'.
- ~44 hits where the original text was genuinely sentence-initial
('It is', 'That is', 'They are', 'What is', 'Do not', ...) got
contracted in lowercase, silently de-capitalizing the start of a
sentence. Checked each one's real surrounding text and capitalized
the ones that needed it.
- Confirmed (by reading the actual text, not just trusting vale) that
the 3 remaining 'is not'/'has not'/'it is' hits after those fixes are
vale's own false positives: it matches these as a bare substring with
no trailing word boundary, so it also fires on 'is nothing', 'has
nothing', and the already-correct 'it isn't'. Left those alone --
there's no real issue in the text.
Re-verified with a fresh vale run: the remaining 17 hits are exactly
the union of the 14 legitimate ALL-CAPS/bold-emphasis skips from the
first commit and these 3 false positives. Full accounting in
/agents/iris/state/haiku-batches/contractions-report.md.
Apply contraction fixes across ~40 doc files (setup, integrations, lifecycle,
networking, scheduler, swarm, tools, trust-boundary, UI, etc.). Skipped 14 hits:
- 10 where words appear in ALL CAPS for deliberate emphasis (is NOT, do NOT, etc.)
- 4 where text could not be safely located due to markdown formatting or column position
Applied via systematic scan with checks for fenced code blocks, inline code spans,
and intentional caps. Preserves sentence-initial capitalization throughout.
HeadingColons conflicts with this repo's sentence-case heading
convention -- same shape as the existing Dashes disable, a house-style
conflict rather than a defect.
Percentages had zero true positives on the full docs/ tree: it only
ever fired on identifier uses of "percent" (cpu.percent, percent
resolver), never on an actual spelled-out percentage.
Plurals: rewrote the two real hits to always use the plural form
instead of the parenthetical (s) construction, per house style.
Pure `nix fmt` output from the commit before this one — no hand edits.
203 files: 52 md, 42 tsx, 32 js, 32 css, 21 ts, 13 html, 8 json, 3 mjs.
Reproduce with `nix develop -c nix fmt` on the parent commit; the result
should be byte-identical to this tree.
None of the 13 `.prettierignore` entries appears here — verified by
intersecting the changed-file list against the ignore file, with a
control proving the intersection finds a match when one exists.
`docs/` was reorganised into topic subdirectories and the references to it
were not moved with it. Thirteen distinct paths and three relative links no
longer resolved, spread across nix, css, html, js, markdown and
.prettierignore — a stale pointer is not a markdown problem, it is wherever
someone wrote a path down.
Each mapping resolved to exactly one target. `docs/matrix.md` was the sole
ambiguous basename: .prettierignore lists `docs/tools/matrix.md` separately
and that entry still resolves, so the stale one is the integrations doc.
The three relative links were each one `../` too deep — from `<crate>/src/`
two levels reach the repo root. `hive-agent/src/login.rs` already had the
correct form, in the same crate, at the same depth.
.prettierignore is repointed rather than dropped, though nothing in the tree
runs prettier: no treefmt entry, no CI job, no package script. Whether that
config should exist at all is a separate question from whether it names
files that do.
Per mara's go-ahead on hyperhive#3902 ("getting started is good, but
terminal rendering does not go in there i think"):
Moved 21 top-level docs/*.md files into 7 new topic subdirectories
(existing web-ui/, turn-loop/, swarm/, tools/, crates/ untouched):
getting-started/ setup.md
agent-lifecycle/ agent-hierarchy.md, approvals.md, persistence.md
trust-boundary/ boundary.md, security.md
integrations/ forge.md, matrix.md, github.md, knowledge.md
networking/ gateway.md, network.md, snapshot-store.md
scheduler/ jobq.md, coordinator.md, ci.md, observability.md
process/ conventions.md, gotchas.md, pr-review-gate.md
web-ui/ terminal-rendering.md (moved into the EXISTING dir,
per mara's correction to the original getting-started
guess -- it's UI implementation detail, not onboarding)
The physical layout now matches docs/README.md's own topical headers,
which already amounted to this taxonomy -- see the scoping comment on
the issue for the two findings that motivated this (a genuine
duplication between CLAUDE.md's old "Reading paths" list and
docs/README.md's grouped one, since drifted out of sync with each
other; and the flat layout not matching the grouping we already had).
Fixed every cross-reference this moved across the whole repo (~120
files: docs/ internal links at every depth, Rust doc comments, nix
module option docs, crate READMEs) -- verified two ways: a grep sweep
confirming zero remaining references to any old path, and a script
that resolves every markdown link in docs/**/*.md + CLAUDE.md +
README.md against the filesystem and reports anything that doesn't
exist (zero broken links).
Collapsed CLAUDE.md's "Reading paths" section (the duplicate) down to
a pointer at docs/README.md, now the single index. Rewrote
docs/README.md itself to use the new subdirectory paths and added the
one doc it was missing that CLAUDE.md's old copy had (pr-review-gate.md).
Classified all 22 docs/*.md files first via a haiku subagent (mara's
suggestion) on two axes -- proposed grouping and operator-vs-
implementation focus -- before finalizing the taxonomy; spot-checked
the report and found internal inconsistencies (its classification
table disagreed with its own summary section for a few files), so this
taxonomy is my original proposal + the one correction mara gave
directly, not a blind application of the subagent's table. The
operator-focus data it gathered is still useful for a follow-up
content pass (docs skewing 'mixed' rather than pure operator-facing),
not addressed in this PR -- structure only.
nix fmt clean, both pre-push lints clean.
